The Paris based Al-Muharrir news weekly said in its recent issue that Iraqi Foriegn Minister Naji Sabri informed the Secretary General of the Arab League that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is ready to put his resignation at the disposal of an Arab summit to be held in Baghdad, being plenary or mini, but he stressed Saudi Arabia participation in the summit is necessary.

The paper quoted Sabri as saying to the Arab League Chief, Amr Moussa, that Saddam Hussein welcomes the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz which he considers 'a friend and a dear brother.'

The magazine also said that according to well placed sources, the Iraqi President enthusiastically showed readiness to attend a mini Arab Summit if such a summit is held in Saudi Arabia.

With such wormlike creatures groveling for him in front of his general assembly in Baghdad, Hussein feels powerful and predatory because it reinforces his view that the US is in decline, it is contemptible and as foolish as its senators. It's frustrating to see the Dims go to Iraq and behave like the fools we know them to be. However, it really changes nothing significant. If Saddam leaves soon (exile) he might get to live. If not, he's a dead man walking.

Also, if Saddam goes underground, we'll hunt him down and kill him. This is not rocket science.

If he really wanted to resign, he would of had to resign more than 51 days prior to a US invasion. And then, the Baath party would have to pick a replacement within 48 days prior to the invasion. Saddam is trying to change the rules of war too close to an invasion.

Don't underestimate Saddam. He KNOWS that Bush is serious about Regime change. He KNOWS that this si personal. He KNOWS that Bush will not be deterred by the UN, the DemoRATS, the Europenises, the Arab gutter -- er street. He also knows that the US would kick Iraq's ass again. So he's probably willing to take moves that he otherwise wouldn't take. Like he may well just give up on his weapons of mass destruction. He may well just let the inspectors in and give them pretty much free reign. He might even step aside.

Saddam can afford to play for the relatively long term -- although he is now getting up in age a bit, so he's not a young dictator anymore.

I mean suppose he disarms, steps aside (probably by getting elevated to some honoric title like "protector of the people). Then what?

Probably the demorats, the Europenises, the Arab gutter all rally to his side and demand the lifting of sanctions, the reestablishment of "normal" ties etc. If Bush gives in to this farce, he won't be re-elected, count on it. And Saddam will have outlasted yet another US president. Iraq will be free to develop weapons of mass destruction again, this time without the onerous drain on its economic resources. Given their proven know-how, in five years, they will be even stronger.

More likely, Bush will not be fooled by the Iraqi strategy. But if he goes to war against an Iraq that HAS cooperated with the UN weenies and a Saddam who has voluntarily stepped down from power, what will the world make of our invasion against Iraq then? They will see it as an act of pure aggression, provoked by a personal vendetta more than anything else. Not that they would be justified, but they would, I believe, see it that way.

Maybe, just maybe Saddam has too much ego to carry through on these things. But if he is utterly cold and calculating and unclouded by self-deception, these are moves that he just might take, I fear. It's kind of like a grand scale version of the TORCH's move. As egomaniacal as the TORCH obviously is. It seems clear that he could not bear the thought of the Repubs taking back the senate on his back HE was that much of a partisan . If Hussain has a core of Iraqi nationalism in him and isn't entirelyh about self-aggrandizement, he still has the TORCH card to play.

And therein lies the rub. This is simply a calculated move to try and make it more difficult for GWB to launch a war against Iraq. If Saddam did resign, you can bet your bottom dollar that he would be running the show from behind the scenes.
