Some Italian-Americans, including Miss New Jersey, Alicia Renee Luciano, are upset she was questioned about "The Sopranos" by a judge at the Miss America Pageant over the weekend.

Luciano, who lives in Byram, was caught off guard when the official asked what she thought of the hugely popular HBO television series "The Sopranos." The drama focuses on fictional mob boss Tony Soprano and his dual struggles as an organized crime boss and head of a suburban New Jersey family.

She is believed to be the first Italian-American to become Miss New Jersey.

That's kind of surprising. Aren't there a lot of Italians in New Jersey?

She should have said "I don't watch the sopranos, only sing with them..."

Good point. As Torricelli so eloquently showed, there is a reason why they film "The Sopranos" in New Jersey.

You beat me to it. As an Italian-American myself, I find the Sopranos to be a great show (other than the gratuitous sex scenes). Every other Italian-American I personally know loves the show also. I get offended by pinheads like Torricelli and Cuomo who, in my opinion, do more to harm the reputation of Italians than any TV show could. Thank God we have Scalia and Giuliani to make up for them.

Why should she have been expected to be knowledgeable about any particular cable TV show? I don't have HBO and I resent the implication that HBO programming is mainstream. I've never seen an episode of Sopranos or Sex in the City, for that matter.

Did anyone see The Sopranos last night?

The episode centered around the crew fighting back against Native Americans protesting Columbus Day, and fighting against Italian sterotypes.

Mafia guys... complaining about Italian stereotypes....

i gave away my television in 1984, and, since then, have probably watched about 5 or 10 hours, total, of television programming altogether. well, maybe 20 or 30 hours, maybe. dunno.

remember watching several days worth in 1995 when my wife and i visited banff, and there was a television in the room. too, last time i visisted my mom in maine ... ditto. a superbowl or two with friends. glances over the bar; too, they now show television in burger king.

so, i guess i see some. but i have absolutely no idea what the sopranos are, other than the articles i read posted here, and the now and again by rush limbaugh (he was talking about the show just last week, i seem to recall).

who the heck has time for television?!?

"It was a question that I don't think they'd ask of anyone, other than [someone] with my background."

Her "background"? Makes one wonder about what that actually means. I know there was a Lucky Luciano gansta' guy way back when, wonder if there is a connection and that is why the question was put to her? Still doesn't make it right.

Interesting side note: only reason I remember the name Lucky Luciano is because I attended an exotic car auction about 12 years ago that had a car owned by him go through. It was a '31 Lincoln Roadster with machine gun turrets in the trunk lid (they had been removed by this time) and an actual periscope under the dashboard so that if the cops were chasing him and shooting at him, he could duck and still drive the car. Seriously cool!
