"Florida Town Meeting"
Gubernatorial Debate
Governor Jeb Bush & Bill McBride
October 15, 2002
Tuesday - 11 AM
Universal Studios
Orlando, Florida

To Request a Ticket to the Event:

http://www.floridatownmeeting.com/ftm/form.htm

At 11 AM on October 15, 2002 the Republican and Democratic candidates for Florida governor will meet at Universal Studios, Orlando and address questions from journalists and a studio audience.

The event will be a "radio-only" debate in that the only "live" broadcast will be heard on radio stations throughout the state of Florida. A list of stations will be posted shortly.

Why radio only? In 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon debated on both radio and television. Those watching on TV thought that Kennedy won the debate, however those listening on the radio thought Nixon won. This shows how the type of medium can affect the message.

This is the fourth major debate hosted by Florida's Radio Networks. In 1994 the late Governor Lawton Chiles faced Jeb Bush in the most significant debate of the campaign. In 1998 Bush faced challenger Buddy McKay, and U.S. Senator Bob Graham debated challenger Charlie Crist.

If you would like to participate in the event by asking questions please submit your request for a ticket by clicking here. You may also apply for a ticket to attend the event even if you do not wish to ask a question.

http://www.floridatownmeeting.com/ftm/home.htm

Please read the following information carefully before clicking the "Submit Form" button:

http://www.floridatownmeeting.com/ftm/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/form.htm

1. All audience members must be registered Florida voters and must present a valid voter I.D. card to be admitted. Your party affiliation does not matter. You will also need a photo I.D.

2. Audience members must be at the debate site no later than 9:45 AM (Eastern Time), October 15, 2002 for check-in. Participants arriving after 10:15 AM will not be guaranteed admission. Plan on staying until Noon.

3. All audience members must provide their own transportation to the debate site.

4. If you wish to be chosen to ask a question, you must write down 4 questions of statewide interest on a piece of paper and bring it with you to the event. 2 of the questions must be addressed to the Democratic candidate and 2 to the Republican candidate. These questions will be reviewed by our staff before the event. There is no limitation as to subject matter, however, no personal attacks, "loaded", inflammatory, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate questions will be allowed. "Grandstanding" will not be permitted. Follow-up questions are not permitted.

5. All audience members will not have the opportunity to ask questions. Questioners are selected at random from the audience before the debate begins. Questions are asked of the candidates in an alternating fashion. Since you will not know ahead of time which candidate you will address, you will want to have a question ready for each candidate. You are to ask a question that has not yet been posed by another participant (hence the reason for preparing several questions).

6. Each questioner will speak into a microphone (heard in the auditorium and on radio stations throughout the state) and ask one question in english. You will choose a question (from the 4 pre-screened questions) that has not yet been asked by another participant.

7. The purpose of this forum is to afford "regular" Florida voters an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates. If you are participating in an organized political cause, are a member of the media, are a lobbyist, are a candidate for office or on the staff of a candidate running for office then please do not register to participate in this debate.

8. The organizers of this event reserve the right to deny access to anyone for any reason including but not limited to: Those who appear intoxicated, disruptive, or uncooperative. All participants may be subject to a security search. The distribution of campaign literature, flyers, or any other promotional materials is not allowed. Weapons, signs, placards, or any other potentially disruptive materials will not be allowed. Outbursts before or during the event will lead to expulsion and possible arrest.

I saw part of the Florida debate, the problem is most of these debates are played on dem turf. Questions like Hate Crimes, How much more money are you going to give me in student loans, How much are you going to raise teachers salaries, environment.

Nothing about tax cuts, cutting govt spending, social conservatism at all.

Sent in requests for myself and my mother late yesterday. Haven't even received an acknowledgement of the requests. Doesn't sound good.

I am still waiting for another email or a phone call in the next few days. Still keeping my fingers crossed though...
It may take them a few days to get back to you. When you sent in your request, did you specify if you wanted to ask questions or what your party affiliation was?

Right after I posted my last response I received the following email:

Thank you for your request for a ticket to "Florida Town Meeting" the gubernatorial debate on October 15th at Universal, Orlando.
Due to the large volume of ticket requests and only 200 audience seats, we will be randomly selecting audience members for electronic ticketing on Monday, October 7th. You should receive an email (to the address in your registration) before the close of business on that day whether or not your name was drawn for an electronic ticket.

I guess we'll all find out next Monday.

Interesting! Just read your emails, and I received the same email reply from them.

To answer your questions--did not indicate party affiliation, and replied "not sure at this time" about asking a question. What did you do?

Too bad none of us got tickets. On a brighter note, I won two tickets to the Sean Hannity book tour here in Orlando this Saturday :-)
