Turkish police seize weapons-bound uranium 28/09/2002 - 11:04:38

Paramilitary police in Turkey have seized 15.7 kilograms of uranium and arrested two Turks who they said planned to sell the weapons-grade substance, the Anatolia news agency reported today.

Police, acting on a tip, stopped a taxi near the south-eastern city of Sanliurfa, Anatolia said. They found the uranium in a secret compartment under one of the car seats.

Police in Sanliurfa confirmed the arrests but refused to give further information.

Anatolia said the uranium was enriched for use in weapons. Police believe it was smuggled from an eastern European country.

The agency did not say when the arrests were made.

Sanliurfa, 480 miles from the capital Ankara, is close to the Syrian border.

If NYC or DC were hit, the dems would lose a lot of voters.

I assure they would still keep voting for decades to come.(Tamminy Hall)

Yes, the Turks don't want to talk about cheap medicine for the elderly... Your underlying message, that Democrats are idiots, is well taken.

Not to worry...the Turks are probably just politicizing the wars--on terror & on Iraq--to divert attention from domestic issues like the economy.

I said nuclear program, not nuclear weapons program.

The Turks did for a while have an interest in it, although it's been put off, at least formally, as they turn to natural gas. They'd be fools not to be interested in nuclear power research, although they might need to take into consideration how earthquake-prone the region is.

It is only if the probabilities are already known that such a statement has any significance.

Not true. Probabilities are estimated all the time.

The lead case says made in West Germany. The weaponized Uranium probably came from Russia or Ukraine. Notice how they are just saying an "Eastern European Country"? Most likely Russia.

Hmmmm? That container has "Made In W. Germany" printed on it. Just what has their government been saying about the war on terror lately?

The 'rats are so stupid that they don't realize that if there is another WMD attack while they are dragging their feet, they will not only all be voted out, they will be lynched.

My prediction is that this particular shipment was trans-shipped from Ukraine through the trans-Dniestrian republic.

They need to get rid of the guy who has been running the Ukraine (and popular agitation may be on the verge of causing that to happen).

I wonder if they meant depleted uranium, also used in weapons for its density.

There's no way depleted uranium, used in anti-tank shells, would be worth $5 million for 30 lbs of it.

Not true. Probabilities are estimated all the time.

Read what he said; read what I said; read what you said, and you'll see that I was correct.

Probabilities are estimated all the time based on knowledge of what the situation actually is. For instance, if you have a 1 in 10,000,000,000 chance of being the sole winner a particular lottery, it is because it is already known that given the predicted number of players (based on past lotteries) and the possible combinations of numbers a single individual has a 1 in 10,000,000,000 chance of being the only person to choose the winning numbers. If a smoker has a quantifiable risk of dying of lung cancer, it is because it is known that a) of Y number of smokers X number of them have died of lung cancer, and b) that particular person is a smoker.

What the previous poster was doing was inventing a probability out of thin air for the purpose of dramatizing how dangerous the situation could be. But the "could be" depends entirely upon knowing that of every 10 shipments of smuggled bomb grade uranium only 1 is interdicted. If such is known, then the probability of 1 in 10 can serve as a measure of the danger. If not, it's not a probability and is simply irrelevant.

That's great.

Last night, I had an extremely vivid and horrifying nightmare that NYC (I live in the suburbs) was nuked.
