Turkish police seize weapons-bound uranium 28/09/2002 - 11:04:38
Paramilitary police in Turkey have seized 15.7 kilograms of uranium and arrested two Turks who they said planned to sell the weapons-grade substance, the Anatolia news agency reported today.
Police, acting on a tip, stopped a taxi near the south-eastern city of Sanliurfa, Anatolia said. They found the uranium in a secret compartment under one of the car seats.
Police in Sanliurfa confirmed the arrests but refused to give further information.
Anatolia said the uranium was enriched for use in weapons. Police believe it was smuggled from an eastern European country.
The agency did not say when the arrests were made.
Sanliurfa, 480 miles from the capital Ankara, is close to the Syrian border.

ABC News adds:
Authorities believe the uranium came from an east European country and has a value of about $5 million, Anatolian said.
It was not immediately clear when the operation was carried out. Anatolian only gave the first names of the suspects, which appeared to be Turkish.
Police in Turkey seized more than two pounds of weapons-grade uranium last November that had been smuggled into Turkey from an east European nation.

But the Dems want us to wait to attach Iraq! "We don't know if Saddam has these weapons." >sarcasm>

Not to worry...the Turks are probably
just politicizing the wars--on terror
& on Iraq--to divert attention from
domestic issues like the economy. Come
on!...Hitler did it, Bush is doing it
& now the Turks. Ask the Democrats....
they will tell you.
Sanli Urfa is real close to the Syrian Border:

Cop: Do you mind if I search your vehicle
Suspect: No, go ahead...
Cop: Hey, what's this weapons grade uranium doing under the seat?
Suspect: What uranium?
Cop: Look here, 15 kilos of the stuff
Suspect: I have never seen it before, someone must have put it there.
Cop: Right
Suspect: I loaned the car to my friend the other day and it probably fell out of his pocket. Really, I didn't know the stuff was there and it isn't mine.
Cop: You have the right to remain silent....

I hope the Turks have an effective way of questioning these men so that they can find out where the Uranium was headed and who paid for it. Somehow, I think they do.

Turkish Police Seize Weapons-Grade Uranium Sat Sep 28, 8:12 AM ET
ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish paramilitary police have seized more than 33 pounds of weapons-grade uranium and detained two men accused of smuggling the material, the state-run Anatolian news agency said on Saturday.
Officers in the southern province of Sanliurfa, which borders Syria and is about 155 miles from the Iraqi border, were acting on a tip-off when they stopped a taxi cab and discovered the uranium in a lead container hidden beneath the vehicle's seat, the agency said.

Curiosity: What does Turkey do with the uranium they have seized in this incident, and in prior seizures?

Paging Mr. Dasshole...paging Mr. Bonior...
I think the Democrats would be glad if Iraq did obtain nuclear material. If it did, then the US couldn't go after Iraq at all because the risk would be too high.
And then the Dems could go on forever over how ineffective this administration was with Iraq.
