Turkish police seize weapons-bound uranium 28/09/2002 - 11:04:38

Paramilitary police in Turkey have seized 15.7 kilograms of uranium and arrested two Turks who they said planned to sell the weapons-grade substance, the Anatolia news agency reported today.

Police, acting on a tip, stopped a taxi near the south-eastern city of Sanliurfa, Anatolia said. They found the uranium in a secret compartment under one of the car seats.

Police in Sanliurfa confirmed the arrests but refused to give further information.

Anatolia said the uranium was enriched for use in weapons. Police believe it was smuggled from an eastern European country.

The agency did not say when the arrests were made.

Sanliurfa, 480 miles from the capital Ankara, is close to the Syrian border.

Let's Freep mail Daschle, Gephardt, Kennedy, etc. Maybe if they "get the memo" they'll understand their political games aren't funny to the majority of the country.

Hey, either we unionize national defence (like the public schools and the great job their union is doing?) or the Demos let Saddam have us. That's the deal. Unionization in exchange of American lives.
It doesn't matter the union leaders said "no" to home phone numbers of airport security in case of a national emergency, because it invades the members privacy. In case of national emergency, don't call us, we'll call you? Sure.
Great idea Dashole.

Better stock up on emergency supplies now. If they unionize, we're toast.

The Turkish Government executed him didnt they?

No, he still is alive and well and living on the island of Imrali near Istanbul
where he is the sole occupant of the prison.
The Turks took great care to remove him from his cell during the earthquake
to make sure no harm came to him.

Since the Democrats are unwilling to actually trust the President and instead are acting very naive, it appears that civil defense requires us to ready ourselves.

The 'rats are so stupid that they don't realize that if there is another WMD attack while they are dragging their feet, they will not only all be voted out, they will be lynched.

Similarly, I wonder if Scott Ritter realizes what he's doing.

If there are *ever* any American deaths due to Iraq's WMD program, I have three confident predictions:

1. Scott Ritter's head would soon be mounted on a sharpened stick somewhere.

2. No jury in America would convict the perpetrator(s).

3. I would donate money to their defense fund.

I think if they had nukes in American cities or in Israel, they would've used them.

So, what has Saddam been working on, and A-Bomb or H-Bomb? What is needed for each?

He's been working on an A-bomb.

H-bombs take *FAR* more technical sophistication (and resources) to make. I'd be willing to bet large sums of money that Iraq would never be able to produce a working H-bomb.

To give you an idea, H-bombs use A-bombs as a "detonator" for the *really* big bang. So first you have to have the technology necessary to make an A-bomb. *Then* you have to have the (much more difficult) technology necessary to make the A-bomb go off in *just* the right way to trigger the fusion core so that it explodes, instead of vaporizes and self-destructs without reacting.

In terms of difficulty and precision, making a working (Uranium) A-bomb is like throwing a baseball and not fouling (i.e., takes some care and skill), making a working (Plutonium) A-bomb is like striking out Mark McGwire (takes great skill with no mistakes), and making a working H-bomb is like throwing the ball so it intercepts a rifle bullet in flight (superhuman timing and precision are absolutely necessary).

Maybe the cops found 30 kgs but only reported 15. Then later some corrupt local official gets discreetly in touch with Saddam and . . .

If NYC or DC were hit, the dems would lose a lot of voters

as long as they keep voting for democrats, I don't think the Dems will worry about the body count.

The case itself came from West Germany. The uranium inside was processed separately in one of the former Soviet Union territories. I was on a decommission Russian sub docked on the Thames river in London a while back. The disarmed torpedos onboard had certain components on the case stamped "Made in The USA".

Everyday we go by without a massive nuclear attack on the USA (from truck loaded bombs, in say 15-50 cities) is another amazing day..

It's gonna happen, big..

Cop: You have the right to remain silent.... Not in Turkey, in Turkey it might more properly read: "You have the right to scream 'til your throat bleeds."

This is a case where I have no problem with extreme torture....get names....torture them....get names....torture them....get names.....shoot them

The Turks are likely to agree with you. However that technique often produces false information, and also tends to use up the source rather quickly, so that you don't find out everything he knows. Better living through chemistry is the way to go, IMHO.
