Furor erupts over Web site monitoring of Middle Eastern scholars

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A pro-Israel organization has set up a Web site to monitor professors and universities for pro-Arab, anti-Israel bias -- a move some academics are decrying as campus McCarthyism and attempted intimidation.
The Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum said it organized the Campus Watch site to counter pervasive bias in universities' Middle Eastern studies.
The site names schools and specific professors. Forum director Daniel Pipes said the think tank hopes eventually to monitor 250 North American academic institutions.
"Our goal is to monitor, critique and improve Middle East studies," Pipes said. "We're not at universities because our views are not welcome. We're trying to create an alternative voice within the field."
Scholars whose articles are compiled into dossiers on the Web site include Hamid Dabashi and Joseph Massad of Columbia, John Esposito of Georgetown, Juan Cole of the University of Michigan and Snehal Shingavi of University of California at Berkeley. Dossiers are also listed on those institutions as well as a dozen others, including Stanford, Northeastern, the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina.
Opponents immediately called the effort "McCarthy-like" and an attempt to stifle opposition to U.S. policy in the Middle East. Professors listed on the site said they were bombarded with e-mail over the weekend.
In a show of support for those named on the site, about 100 other academics have asked to be added to the list.
Judith Butler, a gender theorist at Berkeley, wrote that she would like to be included in the list of U.S. academics "who oppose the Israeli occupation and its brutality, actively support Palestinian rights of self-determination" and support an informed view of Islam.
The Campus Watch site accuses American Middle Eastern scholars of generally being biased against the United States and being apologists for unfriendly regimes.
University of Chicago historian Rashid Khalidi, who is quoted on the Web site as sympathizing with the Palestinian cause, called the site "slimy" and intended to chill opposition.
"What they're trying to do is exclude from public debate opinions that go against the neo-conservative consensus that dominates discussion of policy on Iraq or policy on the Israeli conflict by smearing us and calling us aliens," he said.
Pipes said he will not remove a "Keep Us Informed" page on the site that opponents say is an attempt to get students to turn in their professors. He said it gives students a place to complain about mistreatment.
"What you have in university is exclusion of alternate points of view," Pipes said. "You've got to subscribe to the party line and then you can make your career; if you don't, you're out."

"I have a PhD--I am a 'Gender Theorist.' You see, I have a theory about gender. There is no such thing as male and female--we are all transgendered. Traditional gender stereotypes are the result of breeder hetero patriarchal attitudes which foster hegemony among the psycho-sexual participants of enema theory and Queer Identity Studies!!"
Ever notice that all these leftists never have any academic discipline in hard science, engineering, math, or medicine? And for this they want $30,000 per kid to pay for the privilege of being "enlightened" by them.
~grin~
I don't know. I think they screwed up pretty bad when they stopped in 1967. It certainly wasn't an exemplar for anyone. Fortunately, they ignore the UN mostly now.

Yep. He did a good job.
As I recall, from another NPR episode, most just couldn't find work. Some ran to Mexio, and still couldn't find work. (Their work was pretty bad)
They later made a living out of being on the black-list. Last year (or the year before), a very old communist held a one-man protest at some awards ceremony and the leftists made a big deal about it. Sheesh. I've seen 4 year olds do better.

And yeah, they ignore the UN now even as Bush is demanding that the UN make more silly proclamations in order that his administration might attack Iraq.
Your pathetic posts don't have a damned thing to do with the article of this thread.
Many of us get off our @$$es and work to make our country a republic again. I've seen at least one win at a local level within the last year. We're not all keyboard warriors.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

I don't think the President gives a rat's pointy little tail any more than I do about the Untied Nations.
On another note: Working in the State Department must really be a drag at this point.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

If it quacks like a duck...
Boy, the leftists and other anti-American types JUST HATE IT when the light of truth is upon them. Scurry, roaches and rats. Time for you to die! (die = mostly figuratively).
And you survived with your mind intact? Most commendable.
I don't remember reading that anyone was imprisoned, though some certainly should have been. Alger Hiss for example, who was a fairly top level official at the State dept, IIRC, and Whittaker Chambers who outed him was given a pretty hard time. (BTW, if anyone here is looking for a great read, take a look at Chambers' book Witness---some of the best writing I've read.)
Richard Nixon took Chambers' side and was vilified by the left forevermore. It took over 20 years to bring Nixon down, but the left finally got him in '74. He was an enemy of the left from the time of the Hiss-Chambers affair in the early 50s.
Some of the Hollywood types who were called by McCarthy to testify were blacklisted in Hollywood, and didn't work for a number of years, like Dalton Trumbo, though I think he and other writers wrote under pseudonyms.
McCarthy might have been an unsavory and unpopular guy personally, but he was on target with this. I was amazed when I started to read about all this, after all the years of propaganda that I had ingested, and then I began to see what the real story was.
The King David Hotel was the site of the British military command ... The Irgun chose it as target after British troops invaded the Jewish Agency June 29, 1946, and confiscated large quantities of documents and took them to the KDH. Irgun leader Menachim Begin said three telephone calls were placed, one to the hotel, one to the French Consulate, and one to the Palestine post, warning that explosives in the KDH would soon be detonated. Begin quotes one British official (refusing to evacuate the building) as saying "We don't take orders from Jews."
For decades the British denied that they had been warned. In 1979, however, a member of the British Parliament introduced evidence that Irgun had indeed issued the warning. He offered the testimoney of a British officer who heard other officers in the KDH bar joking about a Aionist threat to the headquarters. The officer who overheard the conversation immediately left the hotel and survived.
Not really. People would like to say that he was exhonerated posthumously by new documents that have emerged through declassification. However, he was not "right" about any individual person that he accused. He was correct in the general sense but not in any specific sense. McCarthy was not the one who fingered Hiss.
At any rate the congressional hearings were completely fraudulent. They were a smokescreen to convince the public that the Congress itself had not been compromised. However, the Congress itself amended the tax code to exempt members of communist organizations from the social security tax.
That should blow some minds but apparently it doesnt. US Code Title 26 Section 3121(b)(17) is quite specific however and what I am asserting can be easily verified...
Let's have a look:
Section USC 26, 3121(b) defines "employment"
For purposes of this chapter, the term "employment" means any service, of whatever nature, performed (A) by an employee for the person employing him, irrespective of the citizenship or residence of either, (i) within the United States.......except that such term shall not include -....
....(17) service in the employ of any organization which is performed (A) in any year during any part of which such organization is registered, or there is in effect a final order of the Subversive Activities Control Board requiring such organization to register, under the Internal Security Act of 1950, as amended, as a Communist-action organization, a Communist-front organization, or a Communist-infiltrated organization, and (B) after June 30, 1956;
Again I must repeat....this exemption was passed by a majority of Congress. When many of us claim that this Nation was long ago taken over by Communists (and the current administration is full of them) we're not just whistling Dixie.
