She has dreads. What's the problem with that? 34 posted on 9/25/02 5:24 PM Pacific by rdb3The majority has voted. She has committed Thought-Crime... er, hair-crime, anyway.
Her parents (like the rest of us) pay $7,000 per-child, per-year to the Gubmint Schools; but in the Gubmint Schools, your money is not your own.
Alternatively, if her parents are not of the opinion that dread-locks are inherently Eeeeeevil, a "crime against God" (according to so many Freepers, apparently), we could just give her Parents back their $7,000 bucks and let them pick their own School.
But if we did that for everyone, we'd have to abolish the Government Schools.
Separation of School and State.
What a travesty that would be.
** -- yeah, I'm "lurking" your posts with interest tonight, rdb3. I have a list of about 10 FReepers I "post-search" when I want to read interesting commentary. You're on the "short list" at the moment. Lucky you. (grin).

The real solution to this is no government schools. If all schools were private, then parents (or the kids of wiimpy parents) could decide what the standards would be at schools of their own choosing. As long as there are government schools and compulsory education laws, there will be constant battles over who runs things and how.

You know, I don't see a thing wrong with her either. I am a mom of a teen and I allow him to be himself. That means he is allowed to experiment with styles and such ( as long as they aren't a threat to his health and as long as it is legal ) and you know what? He grows out of it. I am doing my best to teach him or rather, to instill into his core to never conform to what someone else says he is supposed to be. As for this girl, she is absolutely a very attractive young lady.

Ark, this is a true story. Last week, I was at a computer outlet store in the checkout. Someone behind me tapped me on my shoulder and said, "Nice braids." I began to say, "Thank you" as I turned around, then I stopped in mid-sentence.
The compliment came from a teenage looking white guy who had his hair cornrowed like mine! The people behind him saw the shocked look on my face and they were laughing, too.
That was something.

This girl is rebellious and an attention seeker
Good for her. More kids should stand up and tell the world that they do not want to be strip searched, they do not want to be forced to change a t-shirt if the administrator does not like the speech on it, that they don't want their automobiles searched for butter knives, that they don't want to be watched by big brother all day, they do not want teachers checking their underwear for thong panties, they do not want to be forced to pee in a cup to join the FBLA, they do not want to be made to wear little Hitler Youth uniforms, they do not want their school newspapers censored for complaints about the school board, that they don't want to be kicked out of school for having an aspirin, that they will not tolerate their religous clubs and meetings to be discriminated against, that they do not want the government to prevent them from saying a prayer. Basically that THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE RAISED BY THE STATE.
Good for the little rebellious Americans, more power to them.

I have no problem with the hair (but my daughter would do it over my lifeless corpse), at least the color is natural. I think it should be up to the parents. It amazes me that some on this forum consider confederate flag shirts at school free expression, but others have a problem with this sort of expression.

These government lackey school officials just want to exercise control over parents and kids. Half the time, no one notices if a kid has a pin going through his lip or green hair. It's always the freaking school bureacrats on a power trip who decide that it's "disruptive." They make it disruptive.

I am tired to death of these punk @ss children trying to run their schools,Her mother, PeTina Lanegan, approves. Her mother pays Taxes.
Say what you want about her mother, in all cases except for Child Abuse, Parental Authority is infinitely (yes, I said infinitely) superior to the Will of the Collective. This ain't Opinion, this is Bible.
Conservatives have two choices -- either tolerate every Parent's personal opinions as to the constitution of the Government Schools, or abolish the Government Schools and give Parents their money back.
C'mon now -- it's not like there is any Virtue in Conservatives selling their souls to the collectivist Government School visions of the Marxist John Dewey, you know.

And those are the kids who are going to be the leaders in this country -- not some little namby pamby who says "Sure, you can look up my butt for drugs." Because you know, that's going to be next.

Would she be less distractive with a shaved head?

I have no problem with the "lurking." But some of these comments puzzle me. "Matted dog hair?" What the heck is that all about?
As for me, I proudly display my rows. When I take them down, my hair measures 13" in length. Not bad for one year, eh?
Just think of me as your "not-so-conservative-looking" conservative. ;-)

She's a good looking youg girl who getting crap that's not deserved. It's not like she has a bad word shaved into her head. I don't understand how this could possibly interfere with her or other students learning. Too many morons in administrative rolls.
Cheers!

She ought to shave her head. That would get more attention that the dreads.

"I think it's ridiculous that they would deny me an education because of my hair," says Kisteesha Lanegan, a sophomore who can't attend Whitefish High School until she gets rid of her dreadlocks."
Well, Kisteesha dear, did you ever think that maybe your public school education isn't worth much if they can deny you an education over something as trivial as your hair style? Look into homeschooling. You'll be much better off and you can see your friends after school and on the weekends. You can avoid your former teachers and school administrators too, which is a blessing in itself.

Basically that THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE RAISED BY THE STATE.Then they can pay to send her to a school where she doesn't have to do these things (like everyone should have to do). If they don't, they can't complain.
When you make schooling into welfare, you create educational ghettos...

Where are the freakin parents? Her mother, PeTina Lanegan, permits her daughter this hairstyle.
Lemme guess -- we should confiscate PeTina's tax dollars, but should expel her daughter if we collectively disapprove of her mother's tolerance in hair-style?
Well, after all, PeTina Lanegan can go enroll her child in a private school which permits such styling, and pay her own way. The important thing is that we keep her money, right??
