In my opinion, what we are dealing with here is the female equivalent of a 450 hp Dodge hemispehical engine that is being forced to live in a world of Nissan Sentras and Honda Accords. In the real world, this girl is no C/D student.

I used to go to triple-features at a Chinese theater in L'enfant Plaza in D.C. There were some chop-sockey movies in which the warriors did serious damage with their topknots - but they had metal devices in their hair!

I was KILLING Communists before you were sh!ttin yellow, little BOY.So why approve of John Dewey now???
Kinda defeats the whole purpose....

I was not rebellious in my highschool because basically it was pretty nice. Middle School was a commie totalitarian prison state though. It shows what sheep most people are that everyone didn't have the same attitude towards Middle School I did.

My High School was a lot better and freer then my Middle School. Why do you think its better to run them like prisons?

We had a dress code at the private high school I attended, and it definitely made a difference. The key words are PRIVATE high school. At that point, the uniform isn't meant to equalize, but to set those students apart from the rest of the school kids. Kids (and parents) have ways of accessorizing uniforms to show status.
Uniforms are impractical as they have only that one use. I'd rather pay a little more for a few sports team items that my kids will wear ALL the time.
The whole point of equalizing kids is anathema to a capatalistic society, but fits in well with most forms of socialism.

I know it's late in this thread for this, and I'm sure we've gone round and round on this before, but if education is in the state constitution, how can you say it is not a state function? I have no question that it is not a federal function, but I do find it quite appropriate for the state and local level government.

It said, ""I love to masturbate." Everybody needs a hobby, and hers doesn't cost anything.
To: Aquinasfan
You would rather the T-shirt say "I hate to masturbate?" Who could believe that?

The girl could have some African ancestorsThe post was in reply to this comment.
Yeah that hair makes her look too much like a Negro.
I contend that she is "part" black, mixed or whatever the pc term is.
Sorry if you didn't catch that newsflash.
Btw, where was the Garden of Eden located?

What exactly is your objection to having and enforcing a DRESS CODE? Which was/is under the control of the local people of the school district? So you wouldn't mind the "local people" from your area telling you what to wear every morning? Sigh! Gotta love people who think communal tyranny is O.K. if it's "local".

The freedom to look and eat the way we choose to is one of the freedoms we have left.I sure would not encourage anyone to adopt this hairstyle, just like I don't want anyone telling me I can't wear a certain tie to a meeting because it's offensive and disruptive.Ah, Trebek, we meet again....
Here's the issue, so far as I see it-- The young lady is choosing to adopt a hairstyle in violation of the school's policy. The school is accommodating the young lady's choice. Period! Freedom, it's a great thing! The young lady is learning a valuable lesson (i.e., actions have consequences).
She has plenty of options: homeschool, transfer to another school district, get a GED, private school, charter school. The list of options is great.
What I dislike is the belief by many on this thread that this girl is a victim.
When my daughter didn't like the rules at her school (e.g., they wouldn't let her pierce her friends' ears on the playground) she pulled out for a year and took classes at a local junior college. She went back her senior year and graduated with the rest of her class.
The point is, this young lady has an opportunity to take control of her life. If she wants an education badly enough she'll get one. If she doesn't want one badly enough she'll continue to blame others for preventing her from getting one....
