What a bunch of idiots in here.....this girl should NOT HAVE TO DISSECT a cat if she isn't going into the medical field. Since when do they do this in high school!! It was VERY tough to dissect a frog years ago in High school!! They let you slide on that back then because it was too hard for may kids (like me). Dissecting a cat should NOT BE ALLOWED. A pet cat is like a baby to ALOT of people....and to ask someone to dissect it is CRUEL!

But on Monday, mother and daughter said, the teacher said she would have to dissect animals or watch dissections if she wanted to pass the class. "I don't see why it's necessary to cut animals when you don't want to go into a medical field, but have an interest in what anatomy is about," said the girl, who wants to be a defense lawyer. Her mother added: "What I want for my daughter is not to be psychologically traumatized by dissecting a cat. She should have the right to choose."

I HOPE THIS TEACHER GETS DISSECTED.

I can remember classmates doing this 34 years ago in my high school. It was the advanced honors biology class.

Of course, back in the old days, we were also taught to punctuate questions with question marks, not exclamation points.

I had pet frogs the year I dissected a frog (and in our school the frogs were pithed... that's a fancy word for brain dead but body still ticking on, part of the lab was seeing how long the heart kept beating. I understood the difference between my pets and the lab animal. Much as I understand the difference between pets and food, and (here's a dangerous one for a crappy typist like me) pets and pests. Just because some people keep pet rats doesn't mean you shouldn't kill the buggers that are in your walls.

Also note this is an honors class, completely voluntary to be in the class, more than likely on the path to medical school or some thing medicine related. If she's that squimish she should find a different career path.

They were doing it when I was in high school in the early 1970s.

NOBODY FORCED HER TAKE THE FREAKING CLASS! IF SHE DIDN'T WANT TO DISSECT THE ANIMAL THEN SHE SHOULD HAVE STAYED O-U-T. SHEESH.

NO, NO CRUELTY, INSTEAD TO SIGN UP FOR A CLASS WHERE IT IS REQUIRED TO DISSECT A CAT WHEN YOU DO NOT WISH TO DO SO IS STUPIDITY. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM CONTEMPLATING THE DISSECTION OF THE HUMAN BUT THE DEAD FREAKING CAT IS SOMETHING SACRED. THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE YOU DISSECT THAT FROG INSTEAD OF LETTING YOU HAVE A FREE PASS. PERHAPS YOU WOULD HAVE A MORE REALISTIC VIEW.

During my HS years (somewhat a time ago...) the regular class got to dissect worms and frogs. The Honors class (mine) got to dissect all of the above as well as the fetal pig. (hehehe Porky...) The AP Bio class got all of that, plus the cat. There was NO listing in the class listing specifying will be dissecting cats but everyone in the program knew that that was part of the class.

As it sounds, (and I am going on what was reported) she knew what the class demanded, and then caused a stink because she didn't want to do so.
Too flipin' bad. This was not a mandated class, and I find it funny as snot that she didn't know that the class involved cat dissection. Don't sign up for the course if you are not willing to do the work.

As much as you want to wail away on the teacher, I have to find fault with the student. If you are going to make a stand and not complete the work, then take the F for the project and test and try to make it up, since this is supposedly a case of morals.....

Sounds like another PETA child who doesn't want to take responsibility for her action or lack thereof...psychology traumatized.... horsepucky!

It's an anatomy class. Not dissecting the cat is like refusing to write a paper or take a test. It's core to the class.
