US Plans for Mass Smallpox Inoculations

CNSNews.com) - The federal government has come up with a plan for vaccinating the entire U.S. population within five days of an actual smallpox outbreak, and on Monday, it will share that plan with state officials.

The 100-page plan includes instructions on how to conduct mass vaccinations: One unnamed federal official was quoted as saying the guidelines address "anything you can think of in running a vaccine clinic...It literally says, 'Here's how you set one up and here's how you run it.'"

The plan spells out how many clinics and healthcare workers would be needed; where the clinics should be set up; and what kind of security would be needed to control a panicky public.

The federal government is still debating who should be vaccinated before an actual smallpox case is reported. A decision on that is expected next month.

The strain that is used for vaccinations does not readily spread. If it did we would not need mass innoculations as the exposure to the virus from the shed virii would suffice. During the time when most people were vaccinated routinly at about age 7 there was always a significant unvaccinateed population nearby and there was certainly no huw and cry about the spread of smallpox.

The same society who fear the mass smallpox vacination are perfectly willing to sit out on their patios and porches and allow mosquitos to inject West Nile infected blood into their systems. More people have died this year than would die from vacination. I am old enough to remember being vacinated several times, once when I was a kid, and twice in the military when I was going to a smallpox prone area. Itsa no big deal! Better to be protected from as many of Sadams toys as possible. It will be a little late if we wait for the first case of smallpox to arrive.

I most heartily agree. I would further, state that by limiting smallpox innocualtions to those who do not have impaired immune systems and certain other medical conditions the risks are even lower.

Yeah, if people leave them in place. Then there's the prospect of say 200 million contaminated bandages going into landfills...

I happen to be in favor of allowing the voluntary vaccination, since it seems like the best option and is the one most in tune with the ideals and character of the country. I'm just pointing out how much safer we were from stuff like this when people could burn their trash.

I've got an idea. During the next election, the US should set up clinics right near the voting booths. If you choose to get a shot, then you can get one. I can't see how our country would give the whole population a vaccination within 5 days. It would be complete chaos. This way, more people would vote, and the chaos level will be much lower if an outbreak does occur. Does this make sense, or should I get my second cup? :)

I do hope this is true. Smallpox is the one bio agent that is truly a threat. It is a wretched disease, spreads rapidly and while preventable, children have not been immunized for it in about 30 years, which means there is a lot of people succeptable to it. This is, other than perhaps ebola, the weapon of choice I would think to cause terror.

Oh, BAHHHHH-LONEY! All you need is a nurse with a syringe and a cop to guard the door. In a situation like this, there will be THOUSANDS of places to get the immunization, and they will be geographically dispersed throughout the country. Some will probably be motor homes going into neighborhoods.

There's little doubt that Iraq possesses and will use smallpox as a weapon. Iraqi military are routinely inoculated against smallpox. In the event that smallpox is deployed against US military in Iraq or within the US, refusing to get vaccinated means that you will become a carrier and infect countless others. Not good.

I doubt very much that vaccination will be mandatory unless smallpox is released into the general population. The vaccine itself causes deaths and neurological damage in a tiny percentage of people.

I understand the higher numbers may be more accurate for an actual epidemic. I was using an overly conservative number to point out the dangers of this disease and the need for vaccinations if otential exposure is probable. In short I am arguing for making the vaccine available for those who wish to be vaccinated. Every person who voluntarily gets the vaccine not only protects themselves (something I would do but would not force another to do) but also contributes to the herd immunity.

This plan has the unintended (though certainly predictable)
consequence of clustering huge numbers of people at vaccination
facilities at the onset of an epidemic. That is the EXACT opposite
of what should be done in that circumstance. Normal procedures would
demand that everyone "quarintine in place," rather than congregate.

They should make the vaccine availbale NOW on a voluntary basis. That would start the process and perhaps tip the logistical balance. The plan as written in insane.

Er, isn't the whole point of vaccination to inject the recipient with a weakened or dead version of the virus that is not capable of producing the disease?
