Gov. Gray Davis lashed out at his opponent Saturday for appearing the day before at the Santa Clara home of Rod Diridon to protest the governor's fundraising practices.
The governor abruptly canceled a Friday fundraiser at Diridon's home aimed at railroad builders after the event was publicized. Critics, including Simon, accused Davis of abusing his role by scheduling the fundraiser to take place the day after he put a bond measure on the 2004 ballot to pay for $10 billion in high-speed rail projects.

Davis lashes back ... I'm still laughing at the mental image of Davis lashing back.
The only mental imagery I can conjure is a skinny, grey haired cat burgular, dressed in a black body stocking, climbing down a vine from a second story bedroom with a pillow case full of cash taken from the tax payers as they sleep.
I thought the Mercury News was down on Davis these days?
So anyhoo, I just got back from Southern California. The media blackout on the Simon campaign was the thing that made the greatest impression on me.
Question: what are the latest polls out there showing? Is Simon starting to close in?
