I see the Libertarians who think it's okey dokey to beat, choke, strangle, maim, starve, whip, burn, bind, punch, slap, drown, break, blind and deafen children have chimed in.

Oh, they personally diaspprove of all these things. Just ask them. But they believe it is an incomparably greater evil to allow the state to intervene under even the most dire circumstances, and they believe it's nobody else's business if a mother beats her own child brainless and senseless either.

But, for the record, they do not approve of these things.

I have a worse one. About thirty years ago I saw a 2-year-old girl sitting in a shopping basket at a market, at dusk, and in the rain. At first I thought she had been left there, but then the window on the car next to her opened and a man reached out and swatted her, yelling "shut the F~~~ up." She was hysterical, and as I walked by I wondered what I should do. I did nothing. Who knows if she's even still alive today. It makes me weep to think of my cowardice in that instance.
