Mother to surrender in videotaped beating of girl
09/21/2002
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A woman seen on a department store security tape punching her 4-year-old daughter plans to surrender Saturday, her attorney said Friday night.
Police have been searching for Madelyne Gorman Toogood since Sept. 13, when a camera in a department store parking lot videotaped her punching and shaking her 4-year-old daughter.
The attorney, Stephen Rosen, said Ms. Toogood is on her way to Chicago and will surrender. She is charged with felony battery to a child.
Indiana police took the search nationwide Wednesday when they released the tape. "We want to get the girl the medical attention she needs," Police Chief Anthony A. Hazen said. "We want to get her to an emergency room and let them examine her."
Ms. Toogood is also wanted in Texas on at least two warrants. Fort Worth police said one warrant involves a shoplifting charge in March. Authorities in White Settlement, a Fort Worth suburb, issued an arrest warrant on an unspecified Class C misdemeanor.
Ms. Gorman's sister, 31-year-old Margaret Daley, who authorities say was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with failure to report child abuse.
Police received more than 1,000 calls about the video, which was first aired Wednesday night.
Staff writer Laurie Fox contributed to this report.

Gorman is also wanted on two warrants out of Tarrant County and White Settlement, in connection with theft and a minor misdemeanor charge.
I love it when millions of people with nothing more significant in their own lives make correcting other people's lives their #1 business. Yet another sign of a sick society getting sicker.
Of course, the worst possible thing you can do to that little girl is to use the gov't brute force and separate her from her natural mother who. I bet, she cares a lot more about her daughter than a million of empty-headed bleeding-heart stupids out there.
It's probably elemnts of the same bizarre crowd who cared so deeply about separating Elian Gonzales from his only surviving father.
You need to be stoned right along with her. You a proponent of right hooks for your own kids? Do not post to me. That is all.
I understand your rage, however...
Madelyne Gorman Toogood
You forgot the sarcasm tag.
So he could send his child to a slave labor camp. "Get in that boxcar, youngun".

I hope you jest. This woman's "love" is not what a child should "feel." She will be scarred forever by this and, of course, repeat this treatment with her own children because she'll believe it's normal to show your children how much you "love" them by acting this way. Physical, mental, and emotional abuse is extremely unhealthy and psychologically and physically damaging.
I don't like being in agreement with you on this subject, but you are right.
People need to have the right to discipline their children. I am not condoning the way she did it. She needs to be taught the right way to spank a child, for bad behavior.
People need to actually watch the tape several times.
The mother is hitting her with an open hand, she is not punching her.Do she go overboard? Yes. A four year old girl may look like a sweet angel, but we do not know the factors leading up to this "behavior" of the mother. Was it the right way to do it? No, but let's bring the whole force of the law down on her.
Take her child away to be put in a state foster home. Yea, that's the answer.
Flame away. BTW, I'll rased six children, so I know a little about the way to discipline your kids.
Those of you who have no children and think their dogs and cats are like children think they know what they are talking about, do not respond
And can you believe her lawyer is claiming that the little girl doesn't have a mark at all on her?
Yeah, right !! < /sarcasm >
I understand your rage, but perhaps we should let justice be meted out by some adults.
Stoning someone is not a good lesson for 2nd graders.

I have to assume you left off the < /sarcasm > tag, right? If not, yeah, I'll take that bet. Look at the video and then tell me how much you want to lose....
Discipline comes from the word "disciple," which means "a pupil or an adherent of another: follower;" "to teach; train."
The one who disciplines, therefore, is to so "teach or train" another that the "disciple" adheres to what is being taught. Discipline must be done in love and with love. I did not see any "disciplining" by this mother. I saw an out-of-control, enraged woman "attacking" her 4-year-old; and prior to her attack, she checked to make sure she wasn't being observed for her imminent assault.
My children have received discipline in the form of spankings, time-outs, and/or withheld privileges. I would hope they pattern the discipline they received by me with their own children; I also believe the discipline they received helped mold them into displaying more appropriate behavior, which, after all, was the intent.
Displaying inappropriate behavior (i.e. attacking another) does not cause the "disciple" to behave appropriately.
