From The Indianapolis Star / StarNews.com:

Storm slams central Indiana

IndyStar.com Report

September 20, 2002

A damaging storm system raked through central Indiana this afternoon, with several unconfirmed reports of tornadoes.

These incidents were reported by emergency dispatchers, though they were still unconfirmed:

-- Extensive damage throughout Beech Grove.

-- A tornado touchdown at the Baxter YMCA in the 7900 block of Shelby Street.

-- Damage at the Greenwood Mall, with at least 40 cars flipped over by strong winds.

-- An apartment complex near 38th Street and Mitthoefer was hit by the storm.

-- An apartment complex at Carson Avenue and Thompson Road suffered damage. The fire department was searching for possible victims trapped in the complex.

The storm flattened homes in southwestern Indiana before it began its rampage in central Indiana, Alden Taylor of the State Emergency Management Agency said.

Ten homes were flattened in a Knox County subdivision. In Posey County, 15 mobile homes and the county highway garage were destroyed.

The storm swept through Martinsville, damaging homes, a Kmart and a McDonald's restaurant, Taylor said.

Indiana State Police and emergency management workers were dispatched to Elletsville in Monroe County to check reports of damage. Communications to Elletsville were disrupted by the storm, Taylor said.

There were no reports of injuries in the early accounts, Taylor said.

The emergency management agency activated its operations center in the State Government Center to coordinate the storm response by state agencies.

A series of tornado warnings were declared this afternoon by the National Weather Service.

The weather service declared it a life threatening tornado emergency.

Weather officials say the safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. If that is not available, go to the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room. Residents should get under sturdy furniture or use blankets to cover themselves.

This story will be updated.

Yes, I'm in the area. I can confirm that some pretty violent storms rolled through here, but I just spent much of the past hour in a sub-basement in the office building where I work.

The Greenwood area, including Greenwood Mall, had reports of extensive damage. At least 40 cars were reported to be "flipped" over. A Galyan's sporting good store, north of Greenwood, had also reported extensive damage. Numerous reports of downed power lines, so be careful out there. I've not yet heard of any injuries or fatalities.

The storm, at least here in town, seems to be subsiding somewhat. Thanks for your concerns and prayers.

I came here to check on Miss Marple - are you okay?!?

I know her area and there is a LOT of damage through there. The reports are just now coming in and the video footage is stunning. All through Greenwood, Indianapolis, Martinsville...

Interstate 65 is closed - tornado went right across it!

Hope everyone is okay!

Severe weather is breaking out here in southern IN/Louisville, KY area.

I'm eagerly awaiting the Gov. Patton news conference (KY) - to hear him admit that he lied about his affair with the owner of a nursing home owner (a story which broke only 2 days ago). Anyway - the severe weather outbreak may cause the news conference to not be aired on tv.

Everyone STAY SAFE!!
