Bacteria Stolen from Biomedical Facility (MSU Lab)
WLNS-TV ^

Posted on 09/18/2002 3:09:05 PM PDT by RCW2001

9/18/02- Someone stole vials of bacteria from an MSU lab, and authorities don't know what they plan to do with it. The bacteria was being processed into a vaccine to fight Pneumonia in pigs when it was stolen late last week. Someone broke into a secure lab, took several vials of the bacteria, a note pad and a computer disk. And nobody seems to know why.

The bacteria was stolen from the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building on campus sometime between last Thursday evening and Friday morning. The stolen material is called APP, it usually causes respiratory infection in young pigs. The bacteria could be deadly to swine, but veterinarian's say, not to humans.

Lonnie King, DVM, Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine: "You can't be hurt by direct contact with the bacteria, or by eating meat from an infected animal."

MSU officials have already contacted local swine producers and state and federal authorities.

I think he should be scrutinizing his own lab assistants first.

This looks to me like something ALF could use against the pork producers.

What do you think?

Hmm... now who would want large numbers of Pigs to be infected? Muslim Terrorists? (I'd add, 'or libertarians', in a joking manner, but they are really sensistive lately...)

Mycoplasma hyorhinus which was called Atypical piroplasmic pleuropneumonia. I hate it when someone uses initials to describe a disease in an article when it hasn't been spelled out in the previous paragraphs. APP was used in the 1960's to the best of my memory. It causes a nasty pneumonia and arthritis and pneumonia in young pigs.

As if bacteria are only found in labs. Me thinks the reporter is trying to create some sort of scare. You can find worse things than these samples in the soil of your backyard or on the raw meat in your refrigerator.

They're clearly preparing a vicious brutal attack on innocent US hogs.

I've looked for another article on this incident but WLNS seems to be the only one with it so far.

Their style is more like slashing the tires on worker's cars at the Armour packing plant. Wankers.

I can't help but think about the PETA spokesman saying how he would like to see Hoof and Mouth spread to the U.S. when it got loose in Britain.

Sick people for sure.

Fascinating to listen to people whine about how terrible and cruel we are to the poor animals and then in the next breath say that they want to see a lot of the same animals suffer from a ghastly and painful disease.

Logic 101, anyone? Anyone at all?
