In an effort to improve students' knowledge of American history, increase their civic involvement, and deepen their love for our great country, President Bush began the announced this morning new History & Civic education initiatives in public schools. Bush later headed to Nashville, Tennessee to campaign for Lamar Alexander, and to attend the Pledge Across America event at East Literate Magnet School. Also today, the White House released an official response to Iraq's alleged unconditional acceptance of UN inspectors. The White House Response

For years, I have loved David McCullough and wished someone like him had been my grandfather. What a guy.

I agree with you about John Kerry being toast. But I also think that John Edwards is a non-starter. He's too much of a smooth-talker for his own good. President Bush drips with sincerity already, a quality that would be pronounced even more when contrasted with Edwards' disingenuine, trial-lawyer, politically convenient empathy. I also think that Edwards' relative youth will be a disadvantage. I know, Bush was relatively inexperienced, too, when he got into the race. But when I say youth, I mean of mind, not skill. Bush has wisdom, wisdom, and more wisdom. Edwards has a shiny suit and a nice hairstylist. I think people will look at the two of them and realize their choice is: statesman or car salesman. I personally resent the fact that Edwards has come out strongly for Saddam...because I know he doesn't care, one way or the other.

I think you forgot: Johnny Carson, Norfolk. His brother used to dip my mother-in-law's pigtails in the inkwell. Later my in-laws lived in a place in Lincoln owned by his mother, and he burned a hole in my mother in law's bedspread when he and his first wife visited and stayed in their place while they were out of town. She's never forgiven him for that. :)

Didn't know Wahoo! had produced so many noteables. I know it as the place with the torpedo outside the county courthouse. :)

I bought Lynne's book for my grandchildren, too. But, since they live in another state and I don't see them often, I gave their parents strict orders to read it with them and include everything they were taught in school themselves. By the way, the parents LOVED the book.

I goggle searched Johnny Carson and he was born in Iowa! Not a Nebraskan Not born there it's true. But he did mostly grow up there, in Norfolk. The portion of US 81 that goes through the town is now "Johnny Carson" highway, avenue or something. I think he claims Nebraska as "home".

The Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously to the Roosevelt family in 2001 and was being returned to the White House to be on display along side Roosevelt's Nobel Peace Prize.
