JAKARTA, Indonesia - While U.S. troops press the hunt for Osama bin Laden and his Al-Qaida lieutenants in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a new threat to the United States and its allies is spreading across Southeast Asia.
The U.S. embassies in Indonesia and Malaysia closed indefinitely this week after a suspected terrorist began telling intelligence officials that a regional Islamist terrorist group planned to mark the anniversary of Sept. 11 by attacking the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and other Western targets in the region.

This should speak for itself.
europe.CNN.com: "MISSING EXPLOSIVES 'TO BE USED IN MANILA'" by Maria Ressa (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MANILA, Philippines (CNN) -- An Al Qaeda plot has been set in motion in Manila targeting the U.S. and Israeli embassies, U.S. and Asian officials have told CNN. At least four tons of explosives are missing in the Philippines. Authorities have been told by an informant that they are to be used by al Qaeda suicide bombers who will travel -- or have already traveled -- to the Philippines from outside the region. (090902)
Malaysia and Indonesia would be inside jobs. Of course there are intellectual and business classes in both countries (including the military) who who will properly identify Islamists as a threat to their existence. So it will be a long and bloody slog there for the Islamists. Perhaps we'll see the rise of a new Suharto, this time to be aimed against Islamists.
As for Singapore, forget it. The Islamists may want to attack Singapore, but all they'll get is a lot of hangings.
We'd love to help.
They would like everything from Morocco, Lybia, Chad and Egypt across to Turkey, Syria , Saudi, Iraq, the other Persina Gulf States, Iran and all of the 'stan states to be one big super-nation of Islam. The Southeast Asian states included. My book series explores this in pretty good detail.
And that's just the first phase along their path to "uniting" the whole world under the totalitarian Islamic flag they want to raise.
That's what it is really about with them. Attacking us and ejecting us is the first step along the path to the first phase. Final phase is world-wide domination.
No sh-t.
In matters political Islam is a system of despotism at home and aggression abroad. The Prophet commanded absolute submission to the imâm. In no case was the sword to be raised against him. The rights of non-Moslem subjects are of the vaguest and most limited kind, and a religious war is a sacred duty whenever there is a chance of success against the "Infidel". Medieval and modern Mohammedan, especially Turkish, persecutions of both Jews and Christians are perhaps the best illustration of this fanatical religious and political spirit.On-line Catholic Encyclopedia
Sounds like a real tolerant and peaceful guy. Could he be a follower of the religion of peace(tm)?
As for your point that they want The Southeast Asian states, I think it'll be a very long time before they get beyond Indonesia, at best.
The Thais, Burmese, Cambodians, and Vietnamese are very nationalistic, very rooted to their terrain, and very inhospitable to Islam.
They also are quite "racially sensitive" for lack of a better term. Arabs in Vietnam (Thailand, Burma, Cambodia) are like ducks in office suites. They'd be booted-out, shot, robbed, and/or killed in no time whatsoever. There is no sympathy for them in these countries (which all by the way support Asian/Chinese/Western values to varying degrees). We won't even discuss Singapore. And Malaysia is Western/Chinese, no matter what the official religion.
So yes if the Indonesians are amenable to being usurped by Arabic Isamist psychosis I suppose there would be a problem. But from most points of view Indonesia still worships Hinduism and Buddhism at a fundamental level. Pockets of psychopaths might be sympathetic, but I do predict a new Suharto to deal with Islamist extremeism in Indonesia.
And that by the way the only country in which they have any chance at all. In the rest they are dead meat.
