WASHINGTON -- Smallpox vaccine would be offered first to hospital emergency workers and slowly extended to other doctors, nurses, police and, eventually, the general public, under a Bush administration plan in the final stages of development.
The plan would begin vaccinations for those at the greatest risk of contacting a patient with the highly contagious disease. That includes infectious disease specialists and emergency room personnel, including doctors, nurses, technicians, even security officers working at hospitals and clinics, according to officials familiar with the administration's planning.

Should the headline perhaps have read "BUSH SMALLPOX PREVENTION PLAN..."????
To: RANGERAIRBORNE
Well of course you are correct, but then, you are not a headline writer for the Sun Sentinal. They are only following orders.

"HIV/AIDS. People who have weakened immune systems, notably people with HIV, should not be vaccinated because they are at high risk for severe side effects. Not everyone who is HIV-positive knows of the condition. Should people be tested for HIV before vaccination? Should it be mandatory? Who would have access to the test results?"
This is the reason there is no wide spread smallpox innoculations. Nope, can't do it, would be discriminatory.

Ho, Ho, Ho! I brought this up a couple of months back in a discussion of why all smallpox vaccination was stopped, when we KNEW that the Russians (at least) still had stocks of smallpox virus and a huge bioweapons program- and I was almost flamed out of here!
AIDs appears to be a touchy subject for a few posters to FR...

Uh, I hope that list would include, pilots, airline flight attendants, and all airport personnel.

Well its about damn time...The Russian biodefectors have been warning us for 10 frigging years.

I posred the same thing. We have to die because it is too risky to vacinate with all the undiagnosed HIV positives out there. My bet is that Bush will first vacinate all the illegals to show what a pro open borders guy he is.

Prior to 72 all children were vaccinated. 2 of my 3 children were vaccinated. I have been vaccinated twice, I was never told (that I can remember) that it was a dangerous vaccine.

I was never told (that I can remember) that it was a dangerous vaccine. Probably because the disease is much worse. The Germans developed a safer vaccine in the late 1960s to early 1970s, but it was never tested for effectiveness in places where smallpox was endemic. One strategy the Germans considered was to vaccinate with their attenuated vaccine first to build up a base level of antibodies, then revaccinate with one of the proven strains of vaccinia. The drawbacks to that approach are a requirement for two vaccinations and the slowness with which the antibody levels build up. The existing vaccine is known to be effective up to four days after exposure.
