In a dry run of a smuggling route you need a close 'stand in' for the cargo to really test the validity of the system from start to finish.

A washing machine would be a close stand in for a nuke in size and weight.

Not having a stand in could invalidate the test, because the person/agent might sneak out of the cargo box in port and get away via a method or route that would be impossible for an agent shlepping a 150 pound bulky washing machine (or nuke).

Who around here knows the diff between neutron detectors and geiger counters?

Well, a geiger counter only detect ionizing radiation like á, â, and ã radiations. (á, â are fast-moving particles, while ã is electromagnetic radiation.) Neutrons have no charge, unlike á and â, and therefore they're difficult to get a handle on.

Check out Post #149 on this same thread, with some useful links. Thanks to spunkets for the information.

Wouldn't you expect in today's world we would check for radiation?

I would be most interested in how long ago Clinton got booked on Letterman. It would be quite interesting if he got booked yesterday, right after the news about the ship came out.

These guys just have one load and it's over. we can nuke them many times over. They have a one shot muzzloading pistol, we've got a nine with lots of clips to spare. Who would you bet on in a gunfight?

Bonus question:

Who would you bet on in an ambush?

When I was a kid, we called vanilla Cokes "dishwater."

The local Mom and Pop store, which was really a bookie joint - but I digress, had an old-fashioned marble topped soda fountain.

They'd put Coke syrup, seltzer water and vanilla together and it was like nectar of the Gods. Add your 10-cent comic to the mix and it was kid heaven.

no cargo or ship personel leave the vessel until the vessel is cleared by customs and immigrations

My husband imports agricultural tractors from Japan. I know for a fact that containers leave the ship before being cleared by customs... sometimes even before we have the paperwork for a container. The shipping companies just put the containers on demurage and the importer has to pay a fee.

Can't they take the crew off, take nd it out to sea about fifty miles, and put a few ADCAPS in the thing? Sink the darn ship and the device before it detonates?

Could I 'spose. But I'd rather set it on a table in Congressional chambers for them to contemplate while voting...

Coincidentally, Netenyahu's testimony today talked about Saddam's ability to manufacture radioactive weapons using centrifuges "the size of washing machines."

Perhaps the "washing machine" was a stand in for a centrifuge...or actually the centrifuge itself.

Can you imagine the look on Daschle & Hitlery's faces when that gets unceremoniously dumped on a tabletop? It would be worth the price of admission...

Does anyone have any info on the Chinese Oil Tanker that exploded and sank yesterday.

The only thing I heard, was that it hit a rock and exploded.

Sounds a little strange to me and their press are not like western press.

We had one of those, too, open until about ten years ago. It was most assurredly NOT a bookie joint! However, they did have a neat-o soda fountain.

Forget those kid-stuff cherry and vanilla syrups - you haven't lived until you've enjoyed a Chocolate Coke from the R & O Lunch Counter.
