Clues:
1. Higher than normal "chatter."
2. Orange alert activated.
3. Media stepping up attacks on Bush and Iraq.
4. President has squinty-eyed Texas Ranger look this morning.
5. Rumsfeld looks full of more machismo than usual this morning.
6. Geraldo poking around Tora Bora.
I say we found evidence of his death this week, and Al Qaeda is trying to warn their people ahead of time, perhaps to activate the sleepers.

What princes they are to pronounce this news on today of all days.
A real Hollywood ending ... perhaps there's hope for these ragheads yet.

I wouldn't believe CBS or al-Qaeda, though the evidence seems to indicate that he's dead (no videos, speeches, etc).
Interesting that CBS was monitoring a website in Sudan....
I hope its not a signal to sleepers though
I think that's a logical possibility. They may have been getting their ducks in a row and waited until now to announce it. My guess is that they want a general uprising to cover their terrorist plots. If millions of the "peacefull" start going off spontaneously, the authorities will have a hard time concentrating on the cells.
Perhaps that's the reason for this quote from Ashcroft:
In addition, U.S. intelligence has concluded that lower-level al Qaeda operatives may view the September 11 anniversary as a suitable time to lash out in even small strikes to demonstrate their worldwide presence and resolve," Mr. Ashcroft said. "Accordingly, widely dispersed, unsophisticated strikes are possible, as well."

Jailed al Qaeda figure is source for latest threat alert
Maybe the government had an inkling that this announcement was going to be made. And maybe that's why CBS just happened to be monitoring that site in Sudan...

Dan Rather cautioning that this could just be a trick or a tease on this anniversery.Courage, Dan, courage.

I don't believe anything those people say. Just because they say it, doesn't make it true. Weren't they claiming that they were going to release the video to go with that "Osama" audio just the other day?

It's "He's dead, we got him, but the job is not over yet." When President Kennedy died, the United States did not fold up. When Hoffa disappeared, the Union didn't close shop. Al-Qada is still operating and we can never stop until we have snuffed (and I mean SNUFFED not captured) out every last remnent of the organization and the governments/people that have harbored and supported it.
NEVER FORGET.

There's a long article on Zawahiri in this week's New Yorker. I haven't gotten to the end of it yet, so I don't know if it says anything about the reports of his death in Afghanistan late last year.
To: aristeides
This is just an announcement. There have been speculations for most of this year that he is dead....probably during that battle in Tora Bora. Let's see some proof like his body.

Look at this story filed on CBS's website 2 hours ago...
Al-Qaeda captured in Pakistan.Within minutes, a burly, curly haired man was brought out with his entire face covered by a blindfold. Hundreds of policemen fired off volleys of gunfire to celebrate his capture.
Would they celebrate capturing a low level Al-Qaeda??
The final gunman was captured shortly afterward.

No kidding, and on 9/11 no doubt. Their timing is suspicious
To: Gumlegs
Gee ... which has less credibility? CBS or Al-Qaeda? That has to be the dumbest question I have ever heard. Who doesn't have more credibilitity than CBS?
To: Dog
Isn't CBS an Al-Quaida affiliate???
