Posted by daviddennis to comwatch; Tony in Hawaii On News/Activism ^ Sep 10 4:35 PM #34 of 37 ^ Where is "the bunker" located? In Sacramento? I'm in Woodland Hills, which is in the Los Angeles San Fernando Valley. Looks like we at least have me and Tony From Hawaii wanting to go on the way up there, and so far it looks like my car's the best bet. No reason not to ride in luxury, as long as you folks aren't die-hard Buy American types. |
I'm still considering car versus plane, depending on how my finances are. I'd really prefer to fly, but I might not have the bucks, in which case a shared trip would be better - I couldn't see myself sitting alone in a car for 5-6 hours, I'd get bored to death :-(.
Anyway, so far we have RonDog, Tony From Hawaii and me. Anyone else planning to come up from LA?
In terms of my flying, the later the better, obviously.

When would the freep begin and end? That would really determine my ability to fly. For under $100, I could get there at 8:10 if I left LAX at 0645, or at 9:40 if I left at 8:15.
Also, do I need to rent a car, or are there decent public transport options? Where is the freep in relation to the airport?
D
$97 airfare + $43 full size rental car(*) = about $155 including tax.
14 miles a gallon x 400 miles x 2 ways @ 1.90 a gallon = $54 per leg or $108.
So I would spend about $47 more on the airplane option, but I'd be a lot less drained when getting there and would have more energy for the Freep. And, of course, I could get stuff done on my laptop computer on the way.
Curiously, I could fly out and back on the same day, but that doubles the price. I could get a very nice hotel room for the amount of money I'd save by going that route, so that idea's a non-starter.
Are there other interesting things in Sacramento? By my personal criteria, it's not a very interesting city. (Translation: There is no ocean. There is no beach. There is no pleasant tropical climate. Etcetera). In other words, should I plan on spending the whole weekend in Sacramento, or should I head out of town as soon as humanly possible? Are there other things the Freeper crowd can do there?
If I split with Tony and/or others who wanted to go, I would probably save $100 or so, but there's the wear and tear on my car to consider. Truthfully, the real deciding point is simply that I'd rather not spend so much time in a car.
So unless I'm feeling really poor, it looks like the plane is really better for me.
What's the time schedule for the freep? That is, when does it start and when would it end, including the celebratory meal after?
You can see I'm leaning towards the flight option, but my mind's still pretty open.

(*) I'd might as well go in modest luxury; Budget would charge me $41 for the Ford Focus, $42 for the mid-size or $43 for full. Pity the Lincoln is $69; I don't think I can justify it.
"Did we ever establish a date for the Sacramento freep?" - daviddennis"DumpDAVIS" FReep:October 19th, the last Saturday before the close of Voter Registration would work to our advantage I think.

500 yard range just north of town in Yalo county (5 to 99 to 70, on the right).
Best burgers in the world at the Sqeeze Inn (lousy neighborhood, great burgers).
Easy access to the Sierra with lots of interesting gold rush sights.
Napa valley wine tasting is also an short hop away (don't plan on driving back, too much good wine).
It really depends on what you like to do.
Metabolife?From http://egray.org/items.php?issue=metabolife:
Metabolife, a maker of herbal diet pills containing ephedrine, contributed $150,000 to Davis in 2000. In September 2000, Davis vetoed legislation that would have required a more direct warning on the products, contending that such warnings are the responsibility of Congress. On August 15, 2002, the United States Justice Department announced that it had launched a criminal investigation against Metabolife. Davis made no effort to encourage federal action until after the federal investigation against the company was announced, when Davis had his health director send a letter to the US Food and Drug Administration urging that it take "swift action on this important public health issue."Los Angeles Times, August 17, 2002
