Hah. Reason I asked is because, as a kid, I was around a few of them. My dad was a clamshell operator on a truck crane, and must have dug and set half the septic tanks (and cesspools/leechlines) in the San Fernando Valley during the fifties and sixties.

Lord-a-mercy! I built that stupid backhoe because it looked like I was going to be enlisted to "fix" ( that is, dig up & replace ) my mother-in-law's drain field in 1998... her back yard is too soft to drive a tractor-mounted backhoe over it, whereas a small Caddigger only weighs about 500lbs.
It was that, or dig it up by hand...

Backhoe. My godson and nephew's first word to me, when all the rest was unitelligble. He knew what they looked like, too. We were walking by a school where construction was underway. He pointed at it and clearly said "backhoe" at the age of 18 months.
You can no doubt tell I've been up way too long.
