"While parts of it were sad, you were left with a hopeful feeling because the men who died will go through their children. Plus I enjoyed seeing those babies - they were all very cute..." Yes, the babies were cute and they made for an engaging group photo shoot. But the rest of the program was just a maudlin, treacly attempt at manipulating your heartstrings - a chick-flick of a newsmag story. We in this household take a dim view of stories like this one that reek of "Feelings ... Nothing More Than FEEL-ings..." My wife immediately bolted and went to bed, and I went out on the deck and played with our three "furry children."
When some newsmag tease comes on promising "a heart-rending story that will leave you in tears," I say "Thanks for warning me - no thanks," and gleefully find something else to watch/do.
I said back on September 12, 2001 that one of the WORST by-products of the terrorist attacks would be the media's compulsion to do a "human-interest" story on every last one of the 3000 or so victims. The media hasn't let me down. And they're not done yet.

Also, about the diminishing anger: I think people's anger has been temporarily shifted to Major League baseball owners and players, of all things. What a country.

Welcome to Free Republic, my fellow Kentuckian. What part of the state are you in ?? Do I know you?

I didn't see it, but I read an article about the 9/11 families without fathers in Reader's Digest recently. Very sad, touching.
Welcome to FR!

Didn't ever occur to you that the "fifteen minutes" served a more important purpose?
Smiling tells the enemy: "F**k You. You have not destroyed our lives, you stupid ba$tards. Now you're all gonna die."
Smiling tells all of us: "Don't crater into depression and fear. We're not, why should you?"

I see these women as rising from the ashes and taking on a positive outlook for the sake of their families. Human interest stories speak to the hearts of many people. While I detest the liberal media, I do *not* detest these women coming forward to offer proof of hope to others. I don't see it as claiming 15 minutes of fame and a fat checkbook. Quite the contrary.

Even Daniel Pearl's widow seems to feel no anger toward the killers of her husband. Here's quotes from Mariane Pearl after Daniel's murder by militant Islamists:
"Revenge would be easy, but it is far more valuable in my opinion to address this problem of terrorism with enough honesty to question our own responsibility as nations and as individuals for the rise of terrorism. My own courage arises from two facts. One is that throughout this ordeal I have been surrounded by people of amazing value. This helps me trust that humanism ultimately will prevail."
"My other hope now -- in my seventh month of pregnancy -- is that I will be able to tell our son that his father carried the flag to end terrorism, raising an unprecedented demand among people from all countries not for revenge but for the values we all share: love, compassion, friendship and citizenship far transcending the so-called clash of civilizations"
Personally, I can't understand this and find it sickening. She is either emotionally flat, or brain-dead from living in the gutter of French socialism.

Human interest stories speak to the hearts of many people. They do indeed - that is why I watched it. What really ticked me off is the fact that, of all of the widows who had babies after 9/11, ABC specifically chose to focus on the human interest story of a muslim woman.

Find a better target than this. How mean. If you had ever loved and lost... suddenly and unfairly, you would jump at the chance to tell anyone about the person you lost. Especially a year later when no one else around you is still talking about it. I would talk to anyone who asked. Camera or not. You bet. I am stunned by your statement that these women have all scored big time. How mean-spirited that is.

Oh real nice...you just full of compassion.

Pretty cynical post... I doubt they wanted to trade their husbands lives for money..

...not ONE woman mentioned any anger they felt at the terrorists for what they did to their families. This is stange because anger is one of the phases that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross talks about in her book, On Death and Dying. It must be suppressed, and it will come out.
Denial
Bargaining
Anger
Depression
Acceptance
Kubler-Ross does not mention a final phase which is
Reaching Out.
PS. You can all click on my name to read my story.

Many of these women are too tired, busy and depressed to waste their energy on anger at the terrorists. That's why they need to give themselves an outlet (like a retreat) to let the anger come out, rather than exploding at children or friends.

Actually, watching ABC is pretty rare for me. I'm usually watching Fox News, sports or Nick-At-Nite/TV Land. I ran across the program channel surfing and thought it might be interesting. In fact, I NEVER watch the any of the network evening news programs anymore - it's Brit Hume's program (Special Report) for me from 6-7pm - Thank the Lord for Fox News!
