What a thought. Something so terrible and debilitating as schizophrenia may be no more than a parasitic infestation. And a new form of life discovered in the process. Curiouser and curiouser.

But...but...we've been assured that marijuana use can stimulate the symptoms of schizophrenia, not some spherical particles.
"This result provides genetic evidence that marijuana use can result in schizophrenia or a significantly increased risk of schizophrenia," lead researcher Hiroshi Ujike stated.

It would be interesting to find out how it's passed on, and whether there are genetic factors which would make one more vulnerable to infection by these thingies

I guess they figure, that if they can get away with the HIV-AIDS hypothesis, they can get away with anything.

"They are not any of the usual viruses or bacteria that have been found," Wetterberg said. "They are more like something like the prion which is causing mad cow disease - but it took 15 years until it was found out what that really was."

I assume this article is talking about prions. I don't know why they don't just come out and say it.

Also, haven't we known about these things for some time? I remember learning about them in AP Biology in high school some ten years ago. Not exactly a "new form of life" as the article says. Besides, I seem to recall, there is much debate about whether prions are living at all. I mean, if you can quibble over whether viruses should be included in the traditional taxonomies with other life (as many scientists do), the case for prions ought to be even more dubious.
