AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS? (a question for Freepers)
August 22nd, 2002 | Sabertooth

Posted on 08/22/2002 7:04:53 AM PDT by Sabertooth

This is a vanity post, let's get that straight from the start.

Perhaps the most vain aspect of it is the conceit that it might stay on topic, but I'm going to give it a whirl.

One of the more contentious species of threads encountered on Free Republic are those dealing with the subject of America's immigration policy, particularly with regard to the Illegal Aliens currently in our country. According a range of reasonable sources, the estimates of their numbers here currently here range from six to thirteen million. Whatever the actual count, there are quite a few people now in violation of American immigration law.

One subtopic that inevitably arises is the question of Amnesty:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

That's the question I'd like to put forward to the members of Free Republic.

Almost as inevitably on threads dealing with this subject, flame wars erupt. It's not my purpose to instigate another round of that, they're rather predictable. So I'd like to ask that your comments, if you're inclined to share them, focus on the big picture of American immigration policy, with particular attention to the subject of Amnesty. I'm not interested in the stock and gratuitous divisiveness of race-baiting or referring to the President as "Jorge," or anything of that nature from any quarter. It achieves nothing, it's sulphurous methane heat with no light shed.

I'd also like to avoid ad hominem ambushes. I'm genuinely interested in learning the collective feelings of Free Republic members on this subject. If you're gonna post, I'd like to ask that you ante up with your opinion on the question at hand before engaging the discussion with others. No taking potshots from the obscurity of the sidelines. I'll post my opinion below at #1.

Fair enough?

So, once again, here's the question:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

perhaps maybe it is the American Citizen to should assimilate to their foreign culture.

Opps, should read: perhaps maybe it is the American Citizen that should assimilate to their foreign culture.

Why don't you just use Hitler to compare Saber's opinion to, it would stir up much more emotion, though equally distorted. THe KKK was all about denying citizens their rights under the law. Saber as am I is asking that the rights of the citizens (as well as the survival of our culture) be protected by enforcing the law.

In other words, you support an amnsty every ten years or so to legalize the crimes of those who have entered illegally and have been here for at least five years.

No I don't, and I never said i did.

There is no need to lecture me on amnesty I‘m intimately familiar with all 7 of the past amnesties.

And if they don't want to assimilate? Well let's not think “unhappy” thoughts. Let's just pretend that culture really doesn't matter and perhaps maybe it is the American Citizen to should assimilate to their foreign culture.

Yes, lets set up reeducation camps. You'll be welcome to teach once you finish your EDUCATION camp first.

You always seem to come onto these immigration threads with no other intention than to insult people who believe that existing immigration and border laws should be enforced. Are you above American law? If your answer is no, then why do you believe that illegal aliens should be above American law?

Stop insulting people. Give us some good reasons why American taxpayers should support illegal aliens. Do you believe in a socialist society and wealth redistribution? That is what is happening in this country, and there are millions of us who have worked hard all our lives for our families, and who frankly can't afford to, or want to, support border jumpers from any country. Let them apply legally and support themselves like we always have.

Just what part of illegal don't you understand?

If a home invader succeeded in breaking into your house, would you say, "Oh well, he's already in. We might as well let him do what he wants."?

The point is, if companies started paying fines right and left, it wouldn't take long for most of the illegal hiring to stop.

Absolutely. If there's nothing else I've learned from politics, it's when something doesn't make sense, look at who is making money from the supposed non-sense.

Yes, he might use Hitler's name, but not Stalin's. He would not use that name in vane.

I agree - make it far less economical to hire illegals, than to hire US citizens. In addition, I vote for no amnesty.

LOL, and I'm sure you have a wealth of experience to draw on when it comes to reeducation camps Comrade. I'll try to stay out of your neck of the woods.

Has anybody asked George Bush that question?

As in the line in the theme song from the old TV show Rawhide:

"Head 'em up, move 'em out."
