Mr. Bush, don't squeeze the trigger until our citizens are as well-protected as the Israelis. Right now, Saddam's exit from the world scene simply isn't worth the tragic price our unprotected citizens might pay.

Hack that is fine but 911 is ancient history to many Americans, especially those that deem every move made to do as you advise a bigger threat to their personal freedom than terrorism. You will be accused of fronting for the police state and of using terrorism as a way for the military to gain control of the country. You are fighting a losing cause.

The good colonel is off the mark. The offense is the best defense.

I have written off Scowcroft and others as going wobbily, but if Hackworth makes this warning, I have to ask: what are we not being told? Is there evidence of WMD materials already in place in major cities?

I think he has some valid points. We have not done all we could here at home. Remember when Reagan was in office and the Middle Eastern students were gone in six days? We haven't expelled anyone I can think of, mosques here at home advocate violence, our borders are open, and in celebration of all our wonderful "diversity" the US Post Office is RE-ISSUING the Islamic stamp October 10th 2002. What Hack seems to be saying, correctly, is button down the hatches before stirring up the seas.

. . .agree with the Colonel. Of course, these people need to be dealth with and soon, but not a day goes by that we do not hear of another breach of security or a 'political correctness' that challenges our sanity and our judgements re our security. . .

. . .for one, it seems ludicrous that as we ponder our war against terrorism and against those who manufacture it; we continue to make this country so hospitable to huge populations of what could be, and most likely would be, and in a moment; our enemy.

We must plan our Homeland strategies as seriously as our strategies beyond our borders, IMHO. . .otherwise, we could easily have a kind of Trojan Horse effect/scenario.

Sadly, the changes since Septembe 11 give me little confidence that reason is in any way prevailing .

"Because if you ask savvy members of our security screen about Iraqi WMD, they'll tell you they're already here, that Saddam's agents have been sneaking them in for years. If we can't stop tons of cocaine and heroin, they say, how could we stop a few containers of WMD?"

The real concern that all Americans should have. We should prepare our communities but we shouldnt delay the assault and give these demonic people more time to get this stuff into the country.

I like Hack a lot, but if I remember correctly he was against the Gulf War. I may be mistaken.
I think that after the anniversary Bush will crank up the anti-Hussein machine. 9-11 will be fresh on people's minds after the non-stop coverage of it. Americans will be angry like they were right after that happened.

Have to break out my salt shaker for Hack on this one. He gets paid to write alarmist stuff. If we wait until our defenses are perfect- we'll never be ready. Every day we spend trying to shore up this city or that port is another day the jihadis have to smuggle in more of the very weapons Hack is talking about.

This is the scene in the scary movie where the kids have got the boogey man down and they drop the gun and start hugging each other. We all sit there and say- "No, shoot him again! He's going to get up!" Well, we need to keep the upper hand with this offense and keep sticking it to the jihadis until they don't get up no more. We need to send "Jason" to hell.

Sometimes I get the impression that a view of the entire picture eludes Hack. Having every T crossed prior to every military operation is impossible. If one listens to Hackworth on TV, he seems to be falling over obstacles that can be stepped over.

It sounds like some else must have had a fellow grunt taking his "Tactics 101" final exam. Hackworth sounds like the militant wing of the "Hate America First" crowd.

hack is just an experienced soldier. People who have been in war are frequently very cautious concerning new wars. politicians and irresponsible cheerleaders are not like that.

I wouldn't delay anything, but Hack is right about one thing that we all should keep in mind. Our offense is second to none but our defense is middling at best. Closing borders, tightening control over immigrants, hardening soft targets and beefing up the ability of local agencies to detect and respond to attack seems to be where we need to make progress. Bush seems to be lukewarm at best about the first two and he's going to pay for it politically if something goes wrong.
