Dear Freepers:
I just returned from the First Annual Free Republic Network Convention in Las Vegas.
The Free Republic Network Cruise last October was the most fun I've ever had in my whole life. The Free Republic Network Conference I just attended was the most informative and inspiring two days I've ever had in my whole life.
The Free Republic Network is stretching its muscle, not by talk, but by action. The Free Republic forum is liberty's college. The Free Republic Network is liberty's workplace.
If you attended, please use this thread to post your observations, comments and highlights of the conference. I will give mine below. But before I do, I'd like to take this time to thank Bob Johnson and the FRN board for putting on this conference. It's hard for me to find the words to adequately describe how great this experience was--and how much I learned.
I've posted the "official" transcript of the Conference here. I've asked that folks not post to the thread unless they have corrections to the material therein, and gave them a link back to this thread for discussion/pictures/moose and cheese stuff.
Hopefully, it will be a "one-stop shop" for what was actually discussed at the Conference. We'll see.
Gotcha. He just seems to wear an invisible shield as far as the rules and moderators go around here, IMNSHO anyway. Thanks for the exchange. Gotta run. Heading up to NJ to celebrate my grandfather's 88th birthday this weekend.
Writer by trade, remember? I will admit that my poor little keyboard has received a workout this week ;)
If you really want the thread 'unmolested' I suggest that you ask a mod to lock it.
Done.
But, the only way it will get visibility is for you and others to repeatedly link to it from other threads while flagging people to it.
Will do. Thanks for the tips.

Great -- thanks for putting it together & to all who contributed!
You make an important distinction - it WAS a group effort.
We just want to do our work without being maligned and harassed...
Maybe so, but it takes two for a fight to continue.
There are real issues that need to be addressed by both sides (preferably privately, not splashed on FR for all to see.) It would be best if all were adult enough to engage each other constructively privately, before further public displays of emotion driven statements.
I'm sure I am not the only FReeper that feels like they are a kid caught in between divorcing parents. We have loyalties to and appreciation for both FRN and the DC Freepers, but see them both behaving badly to each other.
We all have our faults, so let's agree to stop pointing out each others faults so publically and work things out off-line. And most importantly, come back and kiss and make up publically. :)
Now, where's that graphic of the waving flag.....??
The nominations were made by a volunteer nomination committee made up of chapter leader representatives and it was explained that they were open to any Free Republic related individual or organization.
As such, I would have thought that the cost of the award would have been paid out of the donations made to Free Republic.
In the three years I have been organizing these awards, they have never been paid for by Jim Robinson, Free Republic LLC or donors to the site. I paid for them out of my pocket until this year when the FRN BOD requested to take over the nominations, balloting, voting and awarding.
I don't understand why the Network paid for the Forum awards.
These are not and were not billed as "Forum" awards. They are in recognition of activism outside of the FR bulletin board. In that regard, the FRN is the perfect vehicle for the generation of this recognition.
We will be happy to send a check to Free Republic for the cost of the award and Jim Robinson can reimburse you for that cost.
I would prefer not dragging Jim into this. If you want to make a point, make it to the FRN BOD and members, but let's keep Jim out of it. He has plenty on his mind right now without having to worry about petty bickering and point scoring.
Didn't you mention on the thread announcing the winners of the awards that the cost for each was about $80.00 and that you were seeking donations to help cover the costs of the awards? Please let me know if that is the correct amount.
Since we didn't use the brass eagles this year, the cost was less. Please don't worry about sending a check, the FRN was happy to sponsor them and will be proud to do so again in the future. Earlier comments may have been terse but for the people who put their time, effort and money into making these awards possible, a "thank you" can go along way to making them feel that investment was well placed. Again, you're welcome.
By the way, when Taxman inquired about accepting the Network's generous offer to comp the DC Chapter's representative who would accept the Eagle Award, he was told that the offer had been rescinded.
This has already been answered, but I'll add a little more illumination. When we didn't receive word from your chapter concerning your designated recipient, Saurapod was asked and was happy to act as your chapters official representative. When Taxman called, I explained this and he said no problem. You are not getting legitimate or accurate information from your sources.
Not really.
Nicely done.
