Two Turkish women look at Islamic bathing suits in a shop in Istanbul, Turkey, in this Aug. 9, 2002 photo. Islamic bathing suits fit loosely so as not to show off the outlines of women's body and are made of a synthetic material that dries quickly. The overwhelming majority of women at beaches in secular Turkey wear western-style bathing suits. (AP Photo/Osman Orsal)

LOL---You win !!!

I see. Do you also ridicule Hasidic Jews for their strange hair-dos?

I hope that my sense of humor is a bit too sophisticated to enjoy stupid, insensitive attacks against simple, pious women from a culture vastly different than ours. Excuse me. I didn't realize I was replying to a superior being.

Who says they are 'simple?' What an insensitive thing to say. They may be very sophisticated engineers or architects for all you know.

simple, pious womenI wonder what would bother them more, my jokes about their swimwear, or your paternalism? (They probably get plenty of both where they live.)
To: independentmind
Now you know. Arrogant ass.

So you enjoy ridiculing others, do you? Your grandmother or great-grandmother probably wore something very similar.I'm sure my great-grandmother may have (although, knowing her, she may have worn less from time to time)
Best advice - smile. That's all this was meant to do was to bring a Sunday morning smile.

Here's your sign.

Paternalism? How so? I have so say that I have never been accused of that before. A difficult feat for a woman, I would say.
To: Glenn
I guess that I'm not the only one who can be accused of being humor-challenged.
To: independentmind
Do you also ridicule Hasidic Jews for their strange hair-dos? Of course not; what do you take me for? But those hats...oy!
(By the way, I don't remember you waging war on any of the numerous Moslem-bashing and Arab-bashing threads. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Bump back, but the thread has changed on a different course as the article. The article is very Catholic in nature. I hope you enjoy it. True enough. I pretty much have stayed away from them. That's not to say, however, that I don't think that Islam is based on a fundamentally flawed worldview, or that women, in particular suffer its consequences.
But, then again, I guess our culture has all of the answers. I mean, just think what they buy do if these women lived in the U.S. Letting it all hang out is just so sexy, isn't it? And if you don't have it all in the right places, it can always be either surgically removed, or pumped up with silicon.

Me, a redneck? LOL.

Re: my #35
My apologies. I see my cut and paste is not working these days!
To: Physicist
I have decided to never make jokes about pious people and their wacked-out beliefs: like stoning, Burkhas, multiple wives, slavery, cutting off heads, Jihad - I used to think they were open to ridicule. But not after the hyper-sensitives on this thread enlightened me. And as far as Hasidic wear, I think the bug infested beards and weird hats are too chique. But I got to laugh at people who make love through a triangular hole cut in a sheet - now that's pious!

Iranian and Saudi money have been pouring into Turkey to convert people to "modest" dress. Some migrants end up abandoning their colorful village folklore dress and opt for the Iran and Saudi influenced dress styles when arriving in the cities and being picked up by "Muslim" missionaries.
We have been patient in the face of this "meddling in our internal affairs."
This covering up phenomenon induced by shame wears off over the generations, however. One can see a definite difference between grandmother (black sheet), mother (raincoat and headscarf), and daughter (spring dress) where the influence had once been applied..
Here's a picture of what's acceptable enough to show up on the cover of a national newspaper:

Her name is Arzu Yanardagh, she's a fashion model. They run a different one every day.
Here's another one. Her name is Sureyya Ayhan who got the Gold in the 1500 meter race in the European Athletic Championships.
