Modesty is a virtue, to be respected. The degree is not important.

Modesty has *very* little to do, cross-culturally, with dress, and when it becomes legalism, it's fair game to make fun of it.

It would appear that Muslims put great stock in appearance. They wish to appear modest in dress, but many have no shame about calling for the death of others.

Bingo.

As I said, the way one dresses has little to do with modesty, cross culturally. This is something Islam has no concept of, therefore they hate us for what they think is "immodesty." We are making fun of their narrow thinking. Modesty incorporates so much more than removing all hints of one's gender from view. Modesty incorporates sending out social/sexual signals and/or returning them in kind. Even someone who covers up their entire body from view can be provocative.

I have decided to never make jokes about pious people and their wacked-out beliefs

LOL!

Check this out:

1 Kings 18: 27
It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, "Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened."
I am sure that I read somewhere that the Hebrew Euphemism which here is translated "gone aside" meant "relieving himself."

If that ain't making jokes, I don't know what is.

In Gone With the Wind, Scarlett made a 'dress' out of her green velvet drapes, not a swimsuit.

I know. Half the joke was that to these women, Scarlett's dress would qualify as swimwear rather than as a formal garment; the other half of the joke was that they are actually purchasing drapes instead of a bathing suit.

Somehow, I can't watch that scene in Gone With the Wind without thinking of Carol Burnett's send-up, complete with a large curtain rod through the shoulders.

"This would make a good doormat." "What am I talking about, I am a doormat." Praise Allah!

Yes of course, sorry I didn't catch your joke, I thought it was faulty memory. I remember Carol Burnett's dress with the curtain rod. LOL

It's interesting how African tribal men don't react one way or the other to their women who aren't wearing a top but Arab men are stimulated at the sight of an ankle or elbow. Maybe it's that the Arabs see sex in everything and other cultures don't.

Yes, to me modesty is an attitude, not just a mode of dress. It is propriety and decency, not only in dress, but in speech, and in one’s conduct. So when we sometimes see Middle Eastern Muslims on the news, modestly dressed, but soaking their hands in the blood of others and holding them up for the cameras, cheering the deaths of others, burning flags, telling us that innocent people "have it coming", we see their modest dress, but we also see their immodest hearts, we hear their immodest boasts. And it’s far more offensive than some "immodest" Western clothing.

Well said. To think I thought no one would bring it up.

Also, I get what you are saying about choice, A Turk! Unfortunately, to have everyone on the planet thinking with an educated opinion will be nigh impossible IMHO.

Hey man. I would like to point out that a lot of female attire IS calculated to entice men. Hell, every animal on the planet tries to entice the opposite sex, with humans being no exception.

I am of the belief that the body is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. Now, before you think you know where I am heading with this, I think I might surprise you.

I agree with you that modesty is a virtue that is being lost to US society. It even shocks me. Let me explain. I am grabbing a coffee today and I see some thirteen year old girl with low cut shorts so low... you know what I am saying. It was quite graphic.

I have also seen pre-pubescent teens wearing skimpy shorts with hand prints on their ass and "cherry" printed on the frontal side. I am sorry, but this is some sick behavior for parents to let thier kids out like this, so I agree with you.

For adults, I dont really care what they do. Think about it, if a woman dresses like a sex kitten all the time, she will be thought of as a slut. It might be unconscious but it is still there. No amount of PC in the world will change a guy thinking that a woman wearing a "Do me," outfit wants to get laid. Its crass, but true.

So, I guess that leaves me with agreeing with you in general but not really caring what adults do. The children... my god it is crazy!!!

LOL! I think he meant that the extremists WANT to have the police beat them up.

As for speedos... how can I put this? Well, they look kind of, um ah, gay?

MAybe its because they look like womens bikinis but I just cant help it. It looks fruity to me, and most American males.

NO offense to Homosexuals or speedos was intended but their just so... GIRLY!!! ROTFLMAO!!! Could not resist... I tried to.

So here's my point, you made it for me. Just like these dames feel strange wearing a bikini, you'd feel strange wearing speedos.. Same thing.

It is beyond belief that straight French and Japanese men think that wearing bikini briefs, Disney cartoon character t-shirts, and small hand purses are masculine beachwear.
