Two Turkish women look at Islamic bathing suits in a shop in Istanbul, Turkey, in this Aug. 9, 2002 photo. Islamic bathing suits fit loosely so as not to show off the outlines of women's body and are made of a synthetic material that dries quickly. The overwhelming majority of women at beaches in secular Turkey wear western-style bathing suits. (AP Photo/Osman Orsal)
Huh? LOL... you're a strange dude if this is what you think. If you are trying to be sarcastic you need to use /sarcastic tags. Usually sarcasm isn't a good idea as it leads to misunderstanding.
Incidently I was only saying that this is a great country because we have freedom of thought, (despite the PC police) and people are free to laugh at anything they happen to find funny. If you are one that would like to take that freedom away then all I have to say to you is "you should be ashamed of yourself."
You misunderstood my comment about Muslims. Independentmind asked why this picture even got posted. I explained that it got posted because, people are talking about all things Islamic. For instance, the Muslims tell us that they don't like they way we dress. They tell us we are immodest. Number one, I don't care what they think. I myself don't like the way some in the West dress, but I'm not going to force people to dress the way I think they should dress. It would appear that Muslims put great stock in appearance. They wish to appear modest in dress, but many have no shame about calling for the death of others.
Well said!
as immodest.
And thanks to AHistory of Women's Swimwear for the gif!
And the twisting sideburns the men wear are hysterical! Just Kidding. Sort of.
Yes, but not in the pool.
(This is not a picture of me.)
Actually, my local newspaper did a series of articles a few months ago about different Islamic countries, and in the one about Turkey, he mentioned that on the night of Sept. 11 (barely one day after the towers fell), a group of hooligans at a soccer game began chanting "To Hell with America". Fortunately, they were booed down and looked to be an isolated incident. He later interviewed some Turks. One pair of "Westernized" Turkish women claimed the whole WTC destruction was a CIA/Mossad plot (and these were "educated, Westernized" women) . However, he later a interviewed a Turkish immigrant from Afghanistan who supported the US campaign to oust the Taliban, saying that people who opposed it "didn't know the Taliban." I thought it was a very good series of articles. I'll see if I can dig them up and post them on another thread...
Turkey doesn't require women to dress like this either, but there are Islamics over there trying to take over and force the rest of the people into a more extreme Islam. These women in Turkey wouldn't have to wear that kind of silly bathing suit --they can wear something that would actually allow them to swim but they're obviously part of the extremist group and soon would have more practical women beat up by their Islamic police. In a way they're even worse than those in strict Islamic countries for that reason.
That implies a woman wearing a practical bathing suit is choosing to be immodest. These women are silly, why even go to the beach if you're going to wear drapes ---you can't swim, can't tan, can't move about freely. They aren't being modest by covering their elbows and knees and ankles because it's not immodest to show those.
#2: "It's good to see them trying to better their lives."
