Lawmakers to study border health issues
By Gary Scharrer El Paso Times

Texas lawmakers will visit El Paso and other border communities this year in an effort to highlight some of the more dire health conditions that some say will get even worse if health care is not protected from budget cuts.

Five or six House members from non-border districts will be in El Paso today and Wednesday. Others will follow to El Paso, Laredo, McAllen, Brownsville and Del Rio in the months ahead.

“It’s an effort by the Texas Medical Association to keep the scalpel off of Medicaid cuts,’’ said Dr. Wm. Gordon McGee, chairman of El Paso’s Border Health Institute and a former president of the Texas Medical Association. “Historically, they balance the budget on the back of Medicaid.”

Cutting Medicaid, McGee said would create a disaster for border communities because low-income families who lose Medicaid coverage will end up in emergency rooms for costlier health care. That will hit property owners already struggling in low property value border communities, he said.

“This is our attempt to bring key legislators ... to Thomason, to the emergency room, to clinics, to colonias and to let them hear from doctors - why they don’t come out here to practice and why they’re leaving - and to get legislative support to maintain the Medicaid service levels,’’ McGee said.

El Pasoan Martha Aragon said El Paso can’t afford cutbacks in health care because the community already has the most uninsured residents of any large city in the country. “Health care is about investments and expenses. Keeping people healthy and out of the emergency room is an investment,’’ said Aragon, a member of San Juan Diego Parish and a leader for the El Paso Interreligious Sponsoring Organization.

You don't really see the health care disaster along the Canadian border with Canadians coming over to get free health care in the US. No one who cannot afford health insurance should be moving into the US, we're losing to Socialists very quickly here. You don't see these immigrants demanding to pay their own way much.

What?! Canada has socialized medicine, they already get it "free" (paid for by tax dollars isn't free, but most people aren't smart enough to see that). So of course they wouldn't stream across our border.

Now how are people supposed to afford health insurance when they don't have a job? I was 25 before I got a job that gave me insurance, should I have been deported? Arguably if i didn't get it free from work I wouldn't be able to afford it myself, should I be deported? According to the socialized medicine buffs 100 million people in this country are uninsured, should they all be deported?

I see the immigrants paying their own way ALL THE TIME. Maybe you're just looking in the wrong place. Or your full of crap. I think it's the latter.

Ooh look, Medicaid, a form of socialized medicine we shouldn't even HAVE in the first place, used by poor people who were born here amungst others, is running out of money. Three words:
Big
F@$#ing
Deal

Notice immigrant aren't mentioned in the article at all. Contrary to popular belief on these threads there are native born Americans whose lineage has been here many gnerations that are poor.

The country I came from is full of even worse silly liberals like yourself so why on earth should I go there? I thought the USA contained at least some real people that understand what is going on in the world and do not whine everyday about true conservative poeple that try and do something about the situation rather then whine like you do all day.
Go back to the hole you came from in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I have noticed this from my American coworkers too who are
second generation immigrant and hence indeed Americans. They hardly speak English. They dream of going back to where their parents came from and they are inherently Anti-American. This really disgusts me.

Look, you show up griping about how lousy you have it at your job. You can expect to get told to stop whining.

OK, buddy: if you're going to whine about people not speaking English, kindly learn the language yourself.

Go back to the hole you came from in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

OK, in addition to English, you need lessons in spiritual discernment, as well.

I agree, and I think that the human condition of people wanting to live around individuals who look, think, and act like them plays into this. Thus, this is the reason why I think that immigration needs to be seriously limited and the bulk maintained to Europe and the west.

This is America, we do not have to learn other languages, especially when non-citizens or newcomers do not want to be respectful to our language, customs and tradition.

Do you know that most people in Europe speak up to three languages and this is not just the educated classes. In China one can expect someone to speak up to four dialects; these dialects btw are as different from each other as Spanish, French and Italian are from each other. The educated classes all speak English throughout the world. This "we do not have to learn other languages" attitude is uncouth, ignorant and just plain silly, particularly in our global economy (which I know you oppose). Anyway I am fluent in English, semi fluent in speaking two dialects of Chinese, I have a reader knowledge of Spanish and I am currently studying German. :)

You just revealed your liberal self. Someone is ignorant because they do not want to learn another language in their home country? What a bunch of nonsense.

Global Economy? Oh yeah, so much for the United States. I'd imagine that you'd be perfectly okay with the dissolution of our borders and America in general.

I'll give you this, you pass your dislike of America-first policies off as being "enlightened". However, all it reveals to me is that you're in favor of policies and ideas that will sink America fast.

Exactly how will learning foreign languages sink America? An educated population will if anything help us out.

It's not a matter of education but a modern day Tower of Babel. It's a matter of multiculturalism and cultural and linguistic heterogeneity.

I really do not see how me knowing 4 different languages is going to rnd up destroying our country. Meanwhile there are many poets and authors who are from non English speaking cultures and yes the beauty of their works are lost somewhat through translation. Goethe, Confucius, Voltaire, the Ramayana, the Aeneid etc. A cultured man should be fluent in at least two languages. I am working on it myself.

Okay. If one wants to learn another language on the side, that's okay. I'm talking about four different languages being spoken by four different groups. Thus, a Balkanization styled country with no defining language. That is dangerous to America.
