You can freely download Red Hat CD images from Red Hat's website, or better yet from a mirror. The money you pay goes towards a technical support contract, the software is free. If you want technical support, you probably need only the personal edition.

Personally, with each edition of Red Hat, I buy one copy just to support the company. I've never found a need to use their tech support.

(I've never needed to use Red Hat technical support because the technical support within the Linux community is more than sufficient.)

You prolly could BE their technical support. ;^)

Good on you for supporting them. Will do the same.

Can you guys ping me when Linux is actually practical to use for something other than familiarizing to the unix environment. I know it's clean and all, but what good is it if it's not practical?

Seriously, what am I supposed to do with "Linux" if I'm not involved with Unix?

Google! But then, I'm very self-service. Other outlets are rumored to be on Usenet and IRC, but I haven't found the need to venture there.

Most of my questions have been addressed in the HOWTO documentation. I usually just Google ie: linux deskjet howto to get thousands of links to the Linux Printing HOWTO.

You can always try The Linux Documentation Project.

Linux is used in a number of embedded environments you may never realize. My TiVo PVR is Linux-based. Some personal Cable/DSL Router/Firewalls are Linux-based. Linux has found its way into a number of products, because it is reliable, malleable, and best of all, royalty-free. Click for a list of products with Linux Inside.

Additionally, there are successful tales of propeller heads setting up inexpensive Linux Internet terminals for their non-propeller head family members. Linux can be customized to completely lock out unwanted changes, and it can be remotely administrated. A homebrew Linux-based Internet terminal could be a good gift to get mom onto the Internet, etc.

Otherwise, its probably best left in the domain of the technical enthusiast.

Amen! Brother!

I'm sure its death will be hastened now that Sun is getting into the Linux biz. Once Sun improves on something, it becomes unusable.

It has a TSENG LABS ET/4000 W32.

From the XFree86.org main page, I clicked on 'Support, Documentation and Resources', the on 'XFree86 video drivers support status', then on Tseng Labs.

A suggestion: the Matrox Millennium II PCI 4 Mb card will give you up to 1280x1024, assuming that your monitor supports it. About $25 on ebay and one of the best 2D cards ever made. Still using it here on daylily with a 19" Dell. Who needs a new eyeglass prescription every two years?

Go to EFNET irc #Linux but, first turn off any auto-away features on your irc client. If you ask a question, be patient, polite, don't use colors and we'll help you. Give us a hard time, you'll get channel banned without answers. Oh ! And don't log on from AOL.
(sig would know who I am by my channel nick :) ... and yes, I'm still there.

Over at the old Same place. At Drucker & Fourth, turn right. At Fourth & Drucker, turn left. Cross MacArthur Park and walk into a grey sandstone building.

I was thinking MYSQL for the backend as well, and enough people have mentioned Red Hat for me to think that was the way to go. Lots of Mandrake mentions, too; but I've always heard the best things about Red Hat.

I haven't used RedHat, I just upgraded to Mandrake 8.2 from 8.1, but keep in mind that Mandrake is RedHat Binary compatible. RPM packages for one work on the other and visa versa. Most of my reading says that RedHat is the way to go for server & firewall duty, while Mandrake is geared more for the workstation side. That being said its distro still comes with all the server/router/firewall side apps as well as Apache, MYSQL, Pearl, PHP, SAMBA (for M$ networking) et al. BTW: Webmin is a way cool browser based admin tool.

Regarding Mandrake and video; 8.1 I had no problems with the old ATI All-in-Wonder board I used in my home machine. 8.2 had some problems with the fonts on it and another ATI based (Mach 64 Rage IIC) machine I have at the office. Using the failsafe driver in "unlisted" (1024x768 & 16 bit colors) got me up and running but I haven't yet had the time to troubleshoot this problem. 8.1 was fine in that regard. And other than this video problem, I haven't had any other problems with regard to drivers and I build my own systems using primarily ASUS motherboards, AMD Athalon processors, Soundblaster MP3 sound boards and numerous CDROM/RW drives. Still 8.2 gets better marks for overall installation. The work around isn't that big a deal to me at this point since both machines are more server oriented that workstation at this time. Basically because my job has me traveling 4 out of 7 days of the week and I haven't had the (In my opinion) the relativly short amount of time to work this issue. But I will be transitioning my work based Linux box to workstation duty. All I really need is good access to Exchange/Outlook servers (corporate's decision not mine) before I can kiss M$ goodbye.

I have tried earlier version of SueSues but never really liked it all that much.

Hope this helps.

The box I am putting this on is a CREAKINGLY old Gateway, a PS-50, which has a Pentium -- barely. It was sold in 1994. The odds of me having vidcard compatibility are vanishingly small, no?

Actually, with the older cards you'll probably find better support than the newer ones. Still bugs crop up, but most Linux distro's are pretty quick to respond (unlike some other $oftware company that shall go nameless). I think you'll find with that old machine that Linux outperforms the other guys OS. Informal benchmarks on my two almost identical machines has Linux blowing the doors off the Windoze based one.
