Charlton Heston must step down. Who should step up?

With the recent announcement by Charleton Heston that he has Alzheimer's and, as a result, will have to give up his position as President of the National Rifle Association, someone will have to be nominated to the Presidency. As this is primarily a PR position, I nominate Tom Celek in the hope that should he accept, he will credit Rosie O'Donnell for his decision

Shall we petition the NRA to ask that Celek be considered? Here's an example of an on-line petition we could build.

It's going to be Kayne Robinson. The NRA will be in good hands. Kayne is retired Assistant Police Chief from Des Moines. Then Republican Party Chair in Iowa. He has been First Vice President to Heston since Heston took over.

Kayne is a first-class guy. At the Iowa Straw Poll when Kayne was party chairman, he gave a better speech than any of the candidates for president. He knows the NRA is about more than hunting.

THere are a lot of people that consider ted to be a bit of a flake, even if he is conservative

Ted a flake? Probably why I like the guy. :-)

The NRA might be in good hands, but the average person will never have heard of him and this will render him less effective as a message bearer to those who are not highly motivated to support the NRA. Tom Celek/Selleck (Actually, I have a copy of Quiggly on DVD that I picked up for ten bucks right next to me but I'm too busy to see how his name is spelled)is a celebrity and even in this outdoorsman's view, he's a good looking guy (which apparently matters big time). He's my choice and we're going to get a petition together, regardless of whether the NRA considers this to be a done deal. They can blow off a thousand members if they like but that wouldn't be very good PR.

William Buckley? I thought he once referred to the 2nd Amendment as being "archaic" and "an embarassment." I don't think his name belongs on the list of possible NRA presidents.

I already mentioned who I would nominate.
The reason I said that Foss and Cooper are too old is because they have been active in the Second Amendment fight for years and since they were never the President before, I can't imagine that they would be more effective now.
They are both heroes to me.

I agree. An attractive woman, especially if she is a mother, would have the anti-gun forces biting their tails in frustration.

We don't need shooters or hunters. We need leaders.

What is your opinion of that good ol' Texas gal Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp?

Here's why I'd support Dr. Hupp:

Suzanna is recognized worldwide as one of the leading advocates for an individual's right to carry a concealed weapon. In 1991, after leaving her gun in her car in order to comply with the law, Suzanna watched helplessly as both her parents, along with 21 others were gunned down in a mass shooting at a local restaurant. As a survivor of this tragedy, her impassioned calls for the right of citizens to self-defense have thrust her into the national debate on the right to keep and bear arms. Since the Killeen massacre, she has testified numerous times across the country for the restoration of the Second Amendment. She has been quoted in US News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, Texas Monthly, People, and many others. Suzanna's tireless efforts in this arena were recently recognized when she was awarded the Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom Award by the National Rifle Association.

Complete Bio

We would have to pry her out of the Texas House of Representatives.

She's needed in Congress much more than she's needed as the president of the NRA. A courageous lady. I have no doubt if she would not have obeyed the law that day, that monster wouldn't have been able to do the damage he did.

What an interesting thread.

I listen only to classical music (well, some George Strait slips in now and then), but I gotta tell ya, I love Ted Nugent.

Now there is a guy who has his act together.

I don't think he would be a great Prez, though, although he would make a great keynote. The model of the presidency with the Heston era was to shift focus to public consumption, rather than just activist consumption.

In that regard, I am impressed by Karl Malone, but have not seen anyone mention his name....why not?

I don't know who that is.
Tell us more about him. I just checked and he's on the Board of Directors and elegible to be President.

Almost all the names mentioned seriously would make a good choice that we would likely all agree on. Even the folks whose main claim to leadership is a movie or record contract have done a fine job of standing up for RKBA. Until Charlton Heston came along, being a famous celebrity was not the main requirement for the NRA presidency -- but he did a great job in the part, as he has in most everything he has done.

It was probably lost among all the words in that short bio of General Foss, so I just wanted to point it out one time more.

You wrote, "The reason I said that Foss and Cooper are too old is because they have been active in the Second Amendment fight for years and since they were never the President before, I can't imagine that they would be more effective now", (my emphasis added)

while I had posted,"From 1988 to 1990, Foss was in the spotlight again as president of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Today, Foss travels around the country and the world, talking about leadership, patriotism and his enduring faith in God." (again, I added the emphasis)

OK, now we women can go back to discussing Mel Gibson, while the fellers can talk of the beautiful women who enjoy and defend our RKBA...

Glad to see you finally got the spelling correct. My tip for you: don't ever work for an editor.
