Seems this would have been covered by CNN and other alphabet channels if true. Debka has quite a negative reputation on FR.

Oh, heck, they are as credible as the New York Times. We might as well read this as Maureen Dowd's column. Ha!
To: greggy; a_Turk
A_turk posted an article that said Turkey had seized control of a major airbase in the N. Iraq no-fly zone. Interesting.

US air force used new precision-guided bombs capable of locating and destroying fiber optic systems Yeah, right. Actually DEBKA has blundered into part of the truth. The capture of the airfield and the region in the former north of Iraq by Turkey is not going to be countered by Baghdad.

You just answered your own statement.

waves of US warplanes swept in from the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia and from US aircraft carriers in the Gulf and flew over the Iraqi capitalOh right. Nobody noticed this except the Debka "military experts."
Debka is an IQ test. Don't fail.

Was this the day we flew "airstrikes" over the no fly zone?

I thought the Saudis wouldn't let us use their bases to to wage war with Iraq.

I agree and am somewhat skeptical, however, with all the rhetoric in the last 48 hours makes one wonder just exactly did go down, maybe some exploratory mission?
To: Selara
We seem to fire on something during our patrols of the no-fly zone about every 4 - 6 weeks. Usually, it's a SAM site that lit up the radar, but we've hit C&C stuff before.
You might remember Bush answering questions about a fairly significant strike during an early visit to Mexico.

I'd say they're on par with the Weekly World News.

I saw that too... must've been a trial balloon, but sure was intriguing.

...waves of US warplanes swept in from the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia... Interesting, considering the fact that the skiffy terrorist-loving Saudis have denied us the use of Prince Sultan Airbase.
DEBKA is the biggest load of crap. They claimed 3 different times between January and April that a major invasion of Iraq by America and allied troops would occur within 4 days.
To: Kryptonite
Debka isn't always right on what they report but, when they report, something hapened some where.
To: umgud
They won't. And they didn't.
We do patrol the no-fly zone out of Saudi Arabia, and we've hit targets in that zone occasionally.
The southern no-fly zone is well south of Baghdad.

"I thought the Saudis wouldn't let us use their bases to to wage war with Iraq." In the Arab world, "saying" and "doing" are two quite separate things...

For the first time, the US air force used new precision-guided bombs capable of locating and destroying fiber optic systems. Yeah - riiiiight.
