Chicago park drops Hillary's name

CHICAGO, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The sign in the park outside the historic Clarke House reads: "Chicago Women's Park and Gardens."

City officials Friday insisted the four-acre near South Side park dedicated by Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1999 never was officially named for the Chicago-born former first lady who grew up in northwest suburban Park Ridge, Ill.

Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lois Weisberg told the Chicago Sun-Times "somebody got the bright idea" to name the park for Hillary to celebrate her 50th birthday in 1997. Clinton hoisted the first shovel full of dirt when the garden was planted.

Weisberg said she invited Hillary to the ground breaking and agreed when someone in Washington suggested naming the park for Clinton.

"We never really definitely named it that," Weisberg said. "I now think it's better not to call it for an individual. I have to take the heat for changing my mind."

Clinton, now a Democratic senator from New York, visited the park again during a later Windy City visit to the see pinkish-white tulips named for her. The $2.1 million park opened in 2000 and lacks only a planned $500,000 fountain and commemorative path with signs for plants.

Weisberg said the Chicago Park District, which maintains the garden, has a policy against naming parks for living people.

However, there's no policy prohibiting the fountain from being named for Clinton, she said.

The 166-year-old Clarke House is thought to be the city's oldest residence

Gee, I don't know...Since they undid the name thing, how about they erect a statue to Hilliary instead? (But put it right next to a pidgeon coop and the world's biggest bird feeder. Sounds fair to me.)

Did they actually think that cheap b!tch would spend a dime in Chicago? Why? It's not like they could vote for her.

Not just yet, anyway.

Great -- there's a really nice one that spews excrement at the waste treatment plant in Aurora.
