Are you concerned about our nation's porous borders? It's a fair question, and I think that it is one that nearly everyone can answer. Please provide your opinion and why you feel one way or the other?

The facts are that some will assimilate, but many won't. Furthermore, with enormous numbers, especially given PC politics, they're not likely to assimilate if the current rate keeps up.

An astute observation. The Mexican (all Spanish speaking) legal & illegal immigrants/migrants have no incentive to assimilate as they are being accommodated in every segment of our society and business to be fully functional without even learning basic English which is the element that holds the multitude of ethnicities together as one nation.

They turned out for Bush because of Elian, not because they generally vote Republican.

They generally vote Republican.

Illegal immigration is a crime. Close the borders and enforce the law, including against the employers who hire them.

… this issue needs to be addressed.

Freepers have been addressing this issue for years – to no avail. Our last chance to do something was the election of 2000. Since both Bush and Gore favored open borders, it was never an issue! Worse, it will never be an issue for Bush since he “thinks” he can get the illegals to vote Republican. But there was a candidate, Pat Buchanan, who made illegal immigration a large part of his campaign. He was summarily excluded from the debates.

Sorry – I had to mention Pat Buchanan. As long as illegal immigration is an issue, his name will come up. My apologies are for inciting all the “Anti-Pats” out there. They’ll be re-posting all the usual “anti-Pat” ad hominem attacks.

If nothing is done, we who live in the Southwest (Occupied Atzlan) will have to learn to speak Spanish to survive here.

If you live in occupied Atzlan, speaking Spanish is the least of your problems. Gringos in the Southwest will have a big problem with Mexico, whose record is not good with non-Mexicans owning property. What is sad is that there used to be a border between the U.S. and Mexico. For a long time, only the U.S. recognized the border but refused to defend it – Mexico never did recognize the border! Now neither the U.S. nor Mexico recognizes the border, inviting Mexico to annex the U.S. Southwest at their convenience (probably at 75% - 80% of the population). It will happen.

Fox to lead new agency representing illegal immigrants in USA
President Vicente Fox, answering criticism that he had tuned out the voices of Mexican immigrants
in the United States, announced the creation of a Cabinet-level agency Tuesday to lobby for the
interests of Mexico's 22 million citizens abroad.

A Poem for you:

I come for visit, get treated regal, So I stay, who care I illegal?

I cross border, poor and broke, Take bus, see employment folk.

Nice man treat me good in there, Say I need to see welfare.

Welfare say, "You come no more, We send cash right to your door."

Welfare checks, they make you wealthy, Medicaid it keep you healthy!

By and by, I got plenty money, Thanks to you, American dummy.

Write to friends in motherland, Tell them come as fast as you can.

They come in rags and Chebby trucks, I buy big house with welfare bucks.

They come here, we live together, More welfare checks, it gets better!

Fourteen families they moving in, But neighbor's patience wearing thin.

Finally, white guy moves away, Now I buy his house, and then I say, "Find more aliens for house to rent."

And in the yard I put a tent.

Send for family (they just trash), But they, too, draw the welfare cash!

Everything is mucho good, And soon we own the neighborhood.

We have hobby--it's called breeding, Welfare pay for baby feeding.

Kids need dentist? Wife need pills?

We get free! We got no bills!

American crazy! He pay all year, To keep welfare running here.

We think America darn good place!

Too darn good for the white man race.

If they no like us, they can go, Got lots of room in Mexico.

The first step is to eliminate the incentives that entice the illegals here, the welfare, free medical care, free education etc. The next step would be for our President to informe el Presidente Fox that he had six months to stop the flow of illegals, or we would pull out of NAFTA, (which we can do with a 6 month notice), lock down the border, (no one crosses), and boycott all mexican products. He would be tripping over himself to comply if he thought we were serious.

Very good ideas and they would work. Mexico has to change from it's extremely corrupt culture and politics. There is no excuse that a country that wealthy has 90% of it's people wanting to leave. The solution really isn't to have them all move to the US.

Also our politicians have to quit encouraging the breaking of laws just to gain some votes, it's one thing that a foreign leader is trying to dictate US policy and is encouraging his people to break every law we have but our leaders don't have to bow down to him. If they would only dare to start to stand up to him things could improve for everyone.

I am concerned about both illegal and legal immigration for several reasons. The biggest problem I see is not necessarily with the nature of the current immigrants, but with their raw numbers combined with the changes to this country over the last one hundred years. I think this country could handle a certain level of immigration from Mexico and Asia just fine - some of the comments I read on FR about the nature of the immigrants are echoes of the comments hurled against immigrants throughout American history - many Americans in the year 1900, for example decried how all the immigrants from Catholic countries were going to ruin the Protestant values upon which this country was founded. Now Pat Buchanan, a Catholic, is saying the new wave of immigrants will ruin the European values upon which this country was founded. Funny how the benchmark moves once you're in the country.

But this isn't my grandfather's America any more. Instead of assimilation, the country promotes diversity for diversity's sake (except for the most important diversity, diversity of thought). The Constitution went from being taught reverently in school to being a subversive document that right-wing whackjobs carry around in their shirt pockets. So you take a level of immigration that this country would have had difficulty assimilating in the old days, and it becomes practically impossible for the country to assimilate it nowadays.

But for all the damage that unlimited legal and illegal immigration may cause to this country, the true cancer, the true rot, is deep inside, in the hearts and minds of so many of our countrymen, as witnessed by the Red and Blue map during the 2000 election. We are no longer, IMO, one country, indivisible - liberalism has made this country radioactive, and the right blow to the nucleus could split things apart...

Illegals from Mexico and elsewhere in Central America are coming here in such vast numbers that it makes assimilation improbable and unneccessary.

Legals too. They no longer are encouraged to learn English and sometimes the line between legal and illegal is quite thin. Many of the legals are far worse types than some of the illegals, a legal who becomes legal by getting over here in time to give birth at the nearest county hospital and then heads straight to the welfare office is much worse than some illegal who is working for anything they get on a cash basis who keeps his family in Mexico but is here only to feed them.

Do you want to know what illegals really think of America? I can ask them for you.

I think we can get a pretty good idea of what many of the immigrants think of America by listening to their favorite music ---the narco corridas. Some of the songs by one of their biggest groups --Los Tigres de Norte are shocking ---the way they glorify the killing of US law enforcement. It's amazing that people think these are all law-abiding family types pouring over the border ---but then you have to know enough Spanish to understand those lyrics.

Yes, and why the powers that be need committees and discussion over this infuriates me. Hello illegal immigration is ILLEGAL, arrest them, the businesses and people that knowingly employ them, ship 'em back. ENFORCE OUR BORDERS. Simple. Then move on to curbing LEGAL immigration from countries whose people refuse to assimilate even the slightest.

... immigration is ILLEGAL, arrest them, ... ship 'em back.

That has been our sole policy for years and it is not effective. A policy that will work is to defend our soverignty at the boarder with lethal force in combination with the prevailing domestic civil proceedures.

Lethal repulsion is not a task for policeman or INS agents because the policy places them directly in harms way. Killing should be left to the military.

Civil arrest and deportation domestically and the reality of grave bodily harm if you're attempting to enter (or re-enter) illegally.

Last but not least, denial of our tax payer supported infrastructure to illegal aliens. Something along the lines of California's Proposition 187 which is currenlty held hostage by Gray Davis.

And while I'm thinking about it here are three suggested immigration/citizenship reforms I support:

1) Eliminate location of birth as a threshold for citizenship.

2) Eliminate personal location as a threshold to our freedoms.

3) Defend our boarders at our boarders with our military.

Yes, and the fact that the principals at the school are required by law to report ANY undocumented citizens! Then they spend the ADA monies for special books, programs, etc. that even our own children never get! Federal monies are reduced, based on undocumentation, but the state monies are not!
