National Park Service Ranger Killed in Shooting Near U.S.-Mexico Border

TUCSON, Ariz. Aug. 9 — A National Park Service ranger was killed Friday in a shootout with suspected smugglers near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

The ranger was responding, along with the U.S. Border Patrol, to a call for assistance from Mexican authorities who were chasing two men in a vehicle that crossed the border into the Organ Pipe National Monument.

Authorities were still investigating what happened, and it wasn't immediately clear why the men were being chased.

Dale Thompson, chief park ranger at the monument, said the shootout took place about 100 yards north of the border in a rugged stretch of desert known for both drug and people smuggling.

The ranger's identity wasn't released.

Compare the lyrics in a Polish polka songs with the lyrics in the Mexican polka songs. There's a world of difference ----the Polish never seem to sing about killing of border patrol and police or the great wealth to be made off illegal drug running.

I'd agree in general, though there are some pretty similar tales told in the music of the Balkans, covering both some pretty brutal wartime methodologies, approprite ways of dealing with informers and traitors, and stories of their own smugglers and bandits of the region. Bad boys are generally a fair subject for musical storytelling, and we have our own ballads of desperados from Jesse James to Bonnie and Clyde.

But some Polka music, particularly that from the Phargo district, is really a crime in and of itself. Submitted as evidence: [MP3] Phargo? Nej!

And Bush should be freeped for allowing the next generation Multi $$$ Billion $$$ INTEL chipmaking plant to be exported to and built in Red China. Are we completely insane?

They're way ahead of you, though they're hoping to use the law, so long as it holds any semblence of linkage to honest courts and justice, which is looking less and less to be the case.

And a few interesting reinforcements are showing up to assist them, as well.

But the problem is not just located in the border states, or the border areas in those states, though it's particularly notorious there. There's a place and way for you to assist, if you care to. And if other interests or responsibilituies prevent you from doing so, no problem. But you'd be welcome.

There may be a need for diplomacy, but I'm not sure Bush or Ridge understands how upsetting that picture is to a lot of people. Fox is encouraging his citizens to illegally immigrate here. One can only hope behind the smiles Fox is being told to back off.

This is balderdash because a prime carrier is Aedes albopictus (import that outnumbers native mosquitos now a thousand to one in many urban areas) and the Tiger mosquito breeds in a dew droplet on the underside of a grass blade and can bite on the fly, 10 different victims in 60 seconds. This makes the CDC's learned advice on WNV about as useful as their affirmative action stooges pronouncements on anthrax. And folks, not a damned thing is being done about WNV !!! The enviro-freaks have stopped us spraying ( 1/10 normal fog will kill mosquitos and not harm many other insects) by screaming the Rachel Carson lies of harm to the environment. Americans need to brush up on Mexican culture since it is becoming a very large part of the US, and much of that culture is about running and dealing drugs. The most popular Mexican music in the US is about drugs and murder of US police and other law enforcement. There is even a shrine in Sinaloa to San Juan Malverde, the patron saint of drug traffickers.

But drugs and people singing about them are big business, and you've probably already read a review of Elijah Wald's book Narcocorrido: A Journey into the Music of Drugs, Guns, and Guerrillas in the Wall Street Journal. The book is available in both English and Spanish editions.

Concur. And the book is a pretty good read. My familiarity with the music came from the botanera a cantina next door to the coin laundry where I'm a frequent visitor. Aside from some pretty good TV coverage of fusbol, there's a jukebox with some pretty fair music on it, including several Tigres del Norte and Jenni Rivera tunes...and the Gloria Estefan music I tend more toward.

I'd say about half the songs on it are narcocorridos.... -archy-/-

As Bill O'Reilly keeps pointing out, we need our military to guard the border. We are now fighting a different kind of war where the enemy does not wear uniforms. Instead, the enemy is infiltrating this country -- as illegal immigrants, as spouses of military personnel, as mail-order "brides," as asylum seekers, or other legal immigrants. We have to adjust our tactics to fight the enemy hiding amongst us.

Or many of the very popular narco-corridas you hear in every Mexican neighborhood here in the US. Killing of US law enforcement agents is glorified in their songs and by their most popular Norteno groups.

The National Review ought to publish an anthology. Fox Network News ought to broadcast the lyrics, translated into English.

If this is what people in Mexico really think, if this is what is being popularized, we ought to hear about it.
