The countdown is on for the US attack on Iraq. Turkey has taken position in Northern Iraq in a blitz.
As concerns of an imminent US attack on Iraq grow day by day, Turkey has secured the Critical Bamerni airport in Northern Iraq.
Operational
Turkey has sent heavy machinery and electronic support equipment to the airport along with military and civil personnel who have made the airport available for military use in short order. Ankara, thereby, made it impossible for any other to strategically control the oil rich regions of Mosul and Kirkuk. Turkey has, additionally, established a umber of security checkpoints in northern Iraq.
Talabani explains
This surprize development was reported by PUK leader Celal Talabani, who had been in Ankara on 8/7.
Reports of 5000 Soldiers
The security apparatus inside Iraq was expanded to include a number of forward bases. According to unofficial sources, Turkey has about 5000 soldiers in the region.
Another unofficial report suggests that there are a few Americans who come and go to the Airport.

Pawn takes center field.
Must be coming quicker than I thought.

I just hope that we haven't waited too long. A guy on FOX this morning said that it would take at least another 30-60 days to lauch an offensive. Meanwhile it seems as though Iraq could draw first blood sooner then that.

I thought the Turks usually had more troops inside Iraq's 1990 borders, watching the Kurds.

"A guy on Fox" doesn't know about any possible secret deployments or troop movements. He knows no more than FReepers. In fact, President Bush's Administration has done a hell of a job so far. NO ONE knows ANYTHING. The Psy-Ops are working very well.

Can you explain how trustwothy this information is? If it is true, the baloon is already half-way up and nobody know it.
To: Bahbah
Knowledge yes, permission no. Permission to take over their airport? Definitely no.

Balloon, dummy, balloon, dummy, balloon, dummy!!!

Are Turkish troups generally in this part of Iraq with its permission and knowledge? Turkey has been operating in this region for 10 years with the full knowledge of Iraq, but not their permission. This region has effectively become non-Iraqi territory.

Out of the mouth of the leader of the PUK (Patrioty Union of Kurdistan), which is one of the clans in northern Iraq.
Turkey has the gonads to do this on it's own, so don't assume this is a Bush thing. Seems we're securing our interests ahead of your campaign.

If it is true, the baloon is already half-way up and nobody know It. I kind of expect it to happen that way. I wonder if all the fuss about SA is a sophisticated version of:
"You see this?"
(Raises fist and then kicks opponent in the boxers.)
"You've got to watch out for that."

Hmmm...goes in line with the Kurd/Turkoman autonomous zone ideas, no?
