Soldier Toy Disarmed at Airport
BBC News ^ | Monday, 5 August, 2002 | BBC Staff

Posted on 08/05/2002 12:36:20 PM PDT by jjm2111

A doll caused a security alert at an American airport because its two-inch plastic gun was considered a dangerous weapon. Judy Powell, 55, from Walton on the Hill, Surrey, bought the GI Joe toy in Las Vegas and packed it in her hand luggage.

But security staff at Los Angeles International Airport refused to let Mrs Powell on board the plane with the replica rifle.

Mrs Powell had to put the gift - minus the rifle - in her suitcase so it could go in the aircraft's hold.

Mrs Powell said: "I was simply stunned when I realised they were serious.

"Security examined the toy as if it was going to shoot them and looked at the rifle.

"I was really angry to start with because of the absurdity of the situation.

"But then I saw the funny side of it and thought this was simple lunacy."

A spokesman for Los Angeles International Airport said: "We have instructions to confiscate anything that looks like a weapon or a replica.

"If GI Joe was carrying a replica then it had to be taken from him."

Remind me to, from now on, to fly naked with nothing with me so this non-sense doesn't get out of hand.
Oh wait. I haven't flown in 18 months, and probably won't again for another 18 months.
I guess this won't matter to me.
Unless a representative puts a firearm to my head and forces me to fly somewhere.
(/sarcasm)

Another reason why I refuse to fly. There is another thread where our mental giants of airport security arrested an 80 year old WWII veteran.

Bill O'Reilly interviewed a 76 year old woman who TOLD them that she had knee implants. They went over and over her...finally taking her to a room, where she had to pull down her undergarments...during which time some man walked in the room. She was so humiliated that she and her daughter just left the airport as soon as they could.

MOST of the reported harrassments, that I have seen are against elderly white persons. At the same time, we are seeing Arabs sueing for being discriminated against at airports.

It is obvious that airport security systems are "cracking down" on the elderly whites, because most of them will not file a lawsuite.

I would remind folks that this is the same zero tollerance that we accept when schools do basicly the same thing to our kids, expelling them for purely idiotic reasons.

I flew to Atlantic City from Ft. Meyers last week. I was randomally pulled from the boarding line and the GERIATRIC woman asked if she could check my shoes. I said No Problem ( being I had on flip flops ) She looked at them and tapped them with her hand . I said " Nobody home "- She smiled and I was passed through. What a friggin' joke !!!!

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. It is lunacy. I'll avoid commercial airports and flights as much as possible, from now to forever.

I will not be treated like a criminal. How many of the perps were white women or for that matter a woman period?

Well, okay, nobody wants to be treated like a criminal. I sure don't. But even though I'm tall, slender, female, and blonde, even though I look like the last person in the world the pro-profiling crowd thinks should be profiled, I think I should be searched as thoroughly as the black-haired, brown-eyed man.

For the sad fact is that women are being used as agents of terrorism in the Middle East--there have been some lovely young women who were apparently happy to blow themselves up for the Islamicist cause. There's no reason to think some of them wouldn't be willing to board an American airliner.

And don't think that because someone is blonde and blue-eyed, he or she couldn't be a Muslim extremist, willing to blow up your plane. There are blonde, blue-eyed Muslims in Bosnia and Serbia, and they hate us just as much as the ones with dark hair do.

It's a dreadful cruelty to humiliate our grandparents with the sort of search people are currently reporting. But remember that terrorists have grandparents and in-laws, and could just as easily slip some sort of device into their luggage. While it's not very likely that a grandmother would deliberately be part of any plot, there's no reason to refrain from going through an old person's carry-on bag. The same principle applies to children. Frightening and humiliating them is barbaric. But the monsters in the Mideast have already demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice their children. If they have any idea that we will let the kids go through security without an inspection, they're going to start using the kids to carry their loads of explosive on board.

This is all moot, anyway. The demons aren't going to try to hijack planes anymore. They're just going to blow them out of the sky with shoulder-mounted surface-to-air missiles.

They've gone from being just incompetent, to incompetent and stupid beyond belief. I'm sure the edict against replica weapons refers to full-size replicas, but no one there has enough common-sense to figure that out.

But hey, now they're making federal wages and earning a pension.

Armless warrior ... George and
his disarmed GI Joe

Two inches ... the toy gun seized by security

Judy, from Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey, added: “I couldn’t believe it.

“I can understand them wanting to ban weapons or things that look like weapons, but surely common sense has to take over at some point.

“I was really angry at first because of the absurdity

of the situation, but then I saw the funny side and realised it was simple lunacy.

“The whole world is going mad if we resort to such stupid measures

"..Does K mart still sell GI Joe?.."

Rosie has convinced them that GI Joe was too violent and might offend someone from the Middle East, therefore, K-Mart will only sell the new Jihad Joe.

I was seeing off my cousin at Lambert Airport and when I emptied my key chain into that little basket the screener noticed I had a NRA Charlton Heston bullet (cast, chrome plated and with a hole through it) on the chain.

I had to remove it and let them keep it until I left.

I guess she was so amazed at it that she didn't notice the .223 (sans powder and primer) attached to the same chain.
