"Enron" Rubin/"Global Crossing" McAuliffe watch - Day FOUR - Joe's largest contributor - CITIGROUP
Free Republic/Newsmax.com ^ | 08/03/02

From Newsmax -

Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joseph Lieberman said Friday that he couldn't remember the exact amount of campaign cash he'd accepted over the years from Citigroup, whose chairman Robert Rubin he has yet to call to testify before his Enrongate probe.

During an interview with radio host Don Imus, the Connecticut Democrat acknowledged accepting $2,000 in contributions from Enron, prompting this exchange:

IMUS: Well, what did you get from Citigroup?

LIEBERMAN: More, but I couldn't tell you the amount.

IMUS: Was it, like, $10,000?

LIEBERMAN: Ah - I honestly don't know. I'd say it was....

IMUS: How about a million?

LIEBERMAN: Oh, no. It was definitely somewhere between $10,000 and.....

IMUS: Was it a million and a babe?

LIEBERMAN: (Laughing) A million and naming rights for some building here on my compound. (End of Excerpt)

In fact, over the past six years, Citigroup gave Lieberman $59,256, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The hefty sum makes Robert Rubin's firm by far the single largest contributor to the Connecticut Democrat's campaign coffers since 1996.

I called Holy Joe's office yesterday, got a staffer who sounded tired of answering the phone by 9 AM.

I told him politely to tell Holy Joe that if he didn't call Rubin, he would appear partisan.

They hate that.

I just blew an email Fox News Sunday's (fns@foxnews.com) way about Joe and his links to Citigroup and Rubin. Tomorrow's show could start yet another explosion of information. We'll see.

Trust scandal haunts Goldman Sullied Bishop Estate owns 10% of bank
USA Today; Arlington; May 3, 1999
Tom Lowry

Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate was set up 115 years ago to educate Hawaiian children as stipulated in the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last direct descendant of the king who united the islands. With assets of about $10 billion, it is one of the richest trusts in the USA and the largest private landowner in Hawaii.

Also last week, state Attorney General Margery Bronster, who is appointed, was ousted from her job by the state Senate. Bronster and her supporters say the move was in retaliation for taking on the politically well-connected trustees. But the trustees' clout, which reached the highest levels of government and Wall Street, is waning. Gov. Ben Cayetano has vowed to continue the investigation with the prosecutors who have been working under Bronster. In the past six months:

* Two of the estate's five trustees were indicted on theft charges for allegedly accepting kickbacks in trust real estate deals. The trustees, former state legislators, arranged to have their condominiums sold at inflated prices in exchange for allowing a developer to do lucrative real estate business with the estate, prosecutors say.

WOW, Madame, that link at #15 is chockfull of good stuff...

"1996 - The estate spends more than $330,000 on federal lobbying - most of it going to three firms to fight, unsuccessfully, the "interim sanctions" law that created penalties for employees or officers of charitable institutions who gain undue "excess benefits" from their positions. The three lobbying firms were Verner, Liipfert, Bernard, McPherson & Hand, a prominent Washington, D.C. firm that employs former Hawaii governor (and friend of Bill Clinton), John Waihee; Hecht Spencer & Associates; and Price Waterhouse. Other Verner firm members enlisted in the effort included former Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell of Maine and former Texas Governor Ann Richards. Also, enlisted to fight the "interim sanctions" regulations was the Rev. Jesse Jackson."

Wonder why such a powerhouse group of RATS is so interested in seeing that there will be no "penalties for employees or officers of charitable institutions who gain undue "excess benefits" from their positions."?! Seems like the RATS know they've got a honeypot here and don't want to be punished if their cronies get caught slding them cash under the table!!

Great stuff...MUD

Is Apollo Management related to Apollo Advisors? (See post above this one regarding donations from Apollo Management to Lieberman's Senate campaign)

Why, sir! You are attempting to impugn the reputations of these honest public servants!

Please, have your second contact mine! This insult cannot go unanswered.

I don't know.

I found an Apollo Management from Canada in a quick search, can't tell if they're related.

To be honest, I've been painting all day with the humidity about 200%; and I'm too exhausted to ask my brain to perform much more than basic motor functions right now.

I'll see what I can find tomorrow, OK?

Pauls TV & Video must be a very lucrative operation. In just three months, from April to June 2002 this guy was able to donate $250,000. I didn't know the markup on vidio equipment was so high. I think a "IRS Lifestyle Audit" is in order.

It could be. On the other hand, Paul's TV sells alot of Plasma, Hi-Def, WEGA, and projection TVs. If he's moving alot of TV's in a week, he could be scraping 1000's of dollars a day off the sales price.

I find it totally implausible that Liarman could not remember what the number 1 contributor to his campaign gave him. $59,000 would definately stick in my mind. What a lying POS
