'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

The people that have seen it and tried it think its a great idea.

I will have no device in my home which will jam up a gun.

To repeat: ***some folks*** are well meaning morons, and it is a waste of time to reason with them because logic bounces off of them like rain of a duck's back.

email me your address I will mail you a couple for you to try. Before you write off the safety bullet try it. Then compare it to any other safety device. Then post your opinion on this side for all to see. You haven't see it yet so how could you possibly know anything about it. It is the fastest safety device out there. It works and it will make your gun safer. Making our guns safer will take away one of the biggest bitches that the anti gun crowd has. It may take me a couple of weeks to get one to you though we have gone from prototypes to setting up the machines to start mass producing them. I have had orders come in for several MILLION. A lot of people, people that know guns think this is one hell of an idea.

Thank you for the sermon.

This is not for everyone, never will be. If you have your gun on you why would anyone need a safety device other than the safety on the gun. As you have stated that what most people need in a near death situation is Martial Arts training. Problem is most people don't know Karatee. Your situation was that you were hired to be a bouncer and you should have been able to do your job. What does that have to do with a safety device. Would you have used a gun safe, how about a trigger lock, how about any of the other 100 safety devices that are out there? No you would not have used any it is rediculous to even think that anyone that has a gun on their person needs a safety device.

Its great that you know Karatee it saved a few people from getting hurt. Now what if the guy that attacked you knew it also and was better than you? Then what. You were lucky you saw it coming. I used to fight full contact and had the snot knocked out of me in a fight by a guy who was a lot faster than I ever hoped to be. There is always someone better.

Your other statement of it being 0000 in the AM and an intruder breaks in now what. Has that ever happened to you? It has to me my senses came on and I was alert as I could have been. I racked my shotgun and said if your here when I get there your dead. He said holly shit he has a shotgun and went screaming out the door. If my gun had been in a safe it would have taken me a few minutes to unlock the lock or find the key to unlock the lock or get a flashlight to punch in the code then load my gun. Getting the picture. Cop or no cop with any safety device its going to take some time to get your firearm ready. With the safety bullet all you have to do is cycle the action and the gun is ready. How long does that take you? It takes me less than a second. Say you do mistakenly fire the gun with the safety bullet in place it still takes less to unjam it than if you had any other safety device. But hey you know karatee!! Go have some fun!

You brought up smart guns. A lot of people are trying anything they can to make guns safer. A lot of very smart people. Why, because anyone that is pro gun wants to make them as safe as possible. I personally believe that accidental shootings are the cancer to the pro gun community. My invention goes a long way for helping in the cure. The other thing is I am doing something other than bitching about everybody else.

If you are so bright and know so very much what have YOU come up with? Show me anything that you think is a good idea and then go promote it. Let's work together on stopping accidental shooting. If you gave as much energy as you have spent in blasting others for trying to make a differance and instead came up with something that would stop accidental shooting maybe we could get somewhere.

Do I hear an AYE MEN

As I understand things and correct me if I am wrong, in Canada the goverment and anti gun groups protested to the gun community about guns not being safe and the pro gunners ignored them. So they started passing laws and now no one can own a gun in Canada except the police and military. I am pretty sure the Consititution protects us but the anti gun network is doing everything it can to change that. So whats the answer? Make guns safer any way we can. If the accidental shooting rate falls that will be one less bitch they have.

I agree with you about not keeping one in the chamber yet a lot of people are doing just that. There are plenty of facts and figures showing that people are storing loaded guns and they have kids. Most everyone on this site knows their way around a firearm and don't need this but there is a place for safety devices and hopefully we can get people to act responsibly when it comes to storing their guns. If not my invention use something, anything is better than nothing.

Read this.

This can not be built without my authority. If anyone tries to make it manditory I will not allow it to be built. Period. This county already has enough laws that tell us what to do. I believe in freedom of choice. I will not force this or have this forced on anyone.

OK READ THIS!!

I have said this over and over again. I have NEVER said that this will allow kids to play with your gun, NEVER. Got it? AM I getting through to you. I agree on education and training, most of the money made by this is going to the NRA to fund education and training, plus I want to make a professional video of some NRA instructors doing what they do best EDUCATE!!
If I could make anything maditory it would be that every kid in the US saw the video of the NRA instructors showing how guns work what to do if they run into gun and then demonstrate what to do and what not to do with a firearm. That all by itself would save a lot of lives. The corporation I am setting up is giveing away a large percentage of its profits to the NRA education fund. Education is the name of the game and I am all for it.

Nice quote by the way. We are lucky to live in a country where so many great men fought and died for what they believe in. I believe in this and will fight for it also. If it makes guns safer and helps keep this country free count me in.

I never said I wanted to let my kids or grandkids play with my guns or any other. Or that your invention posited any such thing. Got it?

What I did say to you was this ...

What I am not willing to do is EVER give my kids or grandkids the idea that a firearm or ammunition can be safe. It is dangerous to concieve of any such notion. I never want them to go down that path because that path ultimately leads to the complete aborgation of firearms rights and to tyranny.

Guns are not safe. Ammunition is not safe. They are not intended to be. I do not want them to be. That is why they are so effective against crime and tyranny.

I teach and train my kids that they are not safe and how they must be handled and used.

I have said this several times to you. I will not step back from it. It is my firmly held conviction. I will talk against anything that would teach or try and make them otherwise.

I believe we are done.

It's like filling your gas tank with water, to prevent you from running someone over.

Anyone who wants to own such a thing deserves to. Pray for their children. They are in real trouble. Their parents may kill them while shooting themselves in the elbow.

No machine will prevent one from being a true, practicing idiot. They'll find a way.
