'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

You brought up some interesting questions. I have never heard of any of the stuff your talking about so I called the ATF in Tallahassee. I faxed him a copy of my renderings and the detailed explination of what they meant. When he stopped laughing he said this guy thinks this is a supressor more laughter. Then he said and if my grandmother had wheels she'ld be a waggon!!

I asked if he could put that in writing as I firmly believe in the CYA rule. He gave me the main # in Washington DC I called that office the investigator says doesn't sound like anything that would be covered but just to be on the safe side send him a copy of the patent applicationa and they will review it and give me something in writing.

I then called Tony the Vice President of Berry Ammo. Tony said no way in hell this thing could hurt anyone. Maybe if the truck carrying them had an accident, then maybe. The speed of the pin that moves through the plastic expander is reduced to -0- in 1/4 of an inch by the pressure of the plastic being placed on it. So after it is fired in goes about 3/8's of an inch all the time it is being slowed down by the plastic expander. It is safe and not under the wildest circumstances could you classify this as a supressor.

Its a safety device designed for one reason to save lives.

The C.O.P. Derringers were manufactured in Torrrance California. They weigh 28 ounces, 3" barrel, constructed from stainless steel, single action only, .357 mganum, four shot. It fires by a rotating firing pin which was reputed to be it's weakest link.

C.O.P. stands for Compact Off Duty Police.

It fires one at a time. It can be modified to fire two barrels at once, but I don't know about all four. It's not a tack driver, but I can pick a bucket sized target off at 50 yards.

I guess you have me there. I thought at 28 oz. it was larger. My Ultra-Compact is 25 Oz. I guess they mean empty so my pistol is much heavier with the 8 .45's in it.

The weight is right. It does weigh about 28oz. It's an extremely durable and high quality gun.

What got me started on this was a four year old that found his grandfathers gun and blew away his 6 year old sister. That was a tragedy on several levels.

The loss of the child
The mental anguish that the surviving child will have to live with
The parents of the both children have had to and probebly still are going through seven shades of hell
The relationship between the Parents of the children and their father the grandfather, how can they even look at each other.
The grandfather is in jail becasue someone got his gun.
The grandfather lost his family all in one second of carelessness. Even though it was an accident the weight of all that is on him and he gets to sit in jail for the rest of his life thinking about it.

Plus all those children that were friends of the little girl.

Jeff, this is what got me started its why I am working so hard on this. All the good intentions and training in the world aren't any good if you let your guard down.
