'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

Key Largo,

Yo!! I am NRA ever hear of em. They happen to like this idea, As far as criminal yea everyone should use them. The only people I want to kill are the ones I want to kill. Gun controll is using both hands.

What this does is make your gun safer and you can get to use it far faster than with any other device on the market.

Sweet,

You and I are on the same page. I totally agree. Problem though people are still dieing and being hurt. Go to Yahoo and type in Accidental Shooting and you will being to see the nature of the problem.

My idea will end all this and make guns safer. It does not harm the gun and makes your gun far quicker to use than any other safety device on the market.

Thanks for the feedback

Dave,

You may be right. Hell if they can sue Burger King because the got fat they can sure sue me.

The problem is simple people are getting killed and hurt by accidental shooting. Yes even cops. Put this SB in all your guns it will save you from having your gun involved in an accidental shooting. It will save you from having to pay for a visit to the hospital or the morgue to attend to someone injured or someone dead.

Then the real fun starts. Police arrive, your arrested because your gun was involved in an accidental shooting. You get to hire a lawyer and fines and then 10 to 20 years in jail. Then the only cold steel you get to handle will be the bars on your cell. So don't use any safety device. Better yet put down someone's idea who is simply trying to save some kids lives.

Unless you have a better idea. If you do please lets see it.

Howdy,

The special tool, ya it comes in a tractor trailor. Made in japan and explodes if your drinking beer while using it.
You have to hold your mouth to the left on sundays only. While rubbing your head counter clockwise look in the mirror and say yes I am an idiot@

Please!! Ok sit down and pay attention. The whole idea behind this is to stop kids from killing each other and making a safety device something you WANT to use. I do not want to have to find a key in the middle of the night to unlock my gun or try to remember the combination to a safe and open it in the dark. What nonsense. The whole point to haveing a gun for protection is to be able to use it when you want. Thats where this comes in. You want safety pull my finger I mean pull the trigger it locks the gun up. Want to use the gun eject the bullet its ready to use. I don't think there is an easier device to use out there that still affords you protection from accidental shooting.

Have you ever cleaned your gun?? Remeber the rod you shoved down the barrel. Same deal here. Except this rod has a special device on the end to push the locking pin back inside the safety bullet and it can be removed.

It works, its fast, its safe and it saves lives unlike pulling my finger. Many have died.

Dave,

I have been working on this for a long time. The problem that exists is all the safety devices out there are only good if everybody uses them. What I had to come up with is a device I would want to use.

Safes, trigger locks, so many devices it would boggle your mind. Go do a patent search some of these things are laughable. Most of the studies I have seen say 1.4 mill households have a loaded gun. 40% of those have a loaded gun and kids running around and no safety devices of any kind.

First question you have to ask is why. The answer is they want to be able to use the gun for safety. Using a safety device would slow the time down that they may need to make the gun ready. That was where I started.

The safety bullet sets in the gun and should only be know to the owner of the gun. So if you need to use the gun simply eject the SB. Yet if anyone else tries to use it it will lock the gun up and not allow another lethal bullet to be placed in the firing chamber.

It works its safe and fast. The only thing I know of that is 100% effect on stopping the gun up is welding the hammer to the firearm. That works. Untill then my idea is the best thing on the market. When they come on the market Send me your address I will send you a couple. Then you can start bragging about it.

Deal?

Dan,

So lets see if I have this right you would let your kids go in the backyard with a loaded gun and let them play with it? Does your family tree by any chance go straight up?

That would be one way to clean up the gene pool.

The whole idea of this is to keep kids from killing each other and Dan it works. I love trading insults. Its better to be informed about an idea before you start cutting it down. I can think of nothing more nobel than to make our guns safe and to protect our kids. That is what I am all about. If you want to dig that than that tells me who you are.

This is the best safety device yet. It will save thousands of lives. If idiots are going to kill themselves they would have anyway. Usually before some of these guys die their last words are "Hey watch this"!!

Locked and keyless!! Cool! How did you do that?

My Safety Bullet is like that it locks the gun and yet you don't need a key for it either.

Tell me about YOUR brillant idea. I would like to see a better product. It it makes guns safe and protects our kids I will help your promote it.

Bill,

When you find it would you let me know. I have always found in my travels that each place has a mixture of both. Guns are not smart they are just a tool. Dumb is not making them safe that is what my Safety Bullet does.

Congradualtions on owning a gun for 10 years. Have they sent you your certificate yet?/ I keep mine next to my board stretcher.

Golden,

If you only knew. I worked on this thing for years. It drove me nuts. O K this is the problem 1.4 million homes have loaded guns with no safety devices!! 40% of those homes have kids. Check with Yahoo and search for accidental shooting. You'll find 60,000 stories!!!! Thats a lot of guns going off and hurting people.

I am pro gun but damn 60,000 accidental shootings and not just by 4 year olds everybody from cops on down. People that have been trained and use guns every day are dieing from accidental shooting. I had to try and find an answer. I did. This Safety Bullet will lock in the gun every time its fired. If you drop your gun it locks the gun up. If anyone other than you uses the gun it locks the gun up. If your kid or anyone's kid fires the gun it locks the gun up.

If you want to use the gun - eject the SB and its ready to use. It will safe lives. Want to make a differance help me get this out there.

We are being hammered by the anti gun network. What are the bitching about anything they can find. Accidental shooting being one of the top bitches they have. If we can take that away from them what do the have/ NADA!

After I designed this I went to the local Firing Range called Gun Fun. Its owned by a guy who is the Olypic gun coach. I told him I invented a new bullet. He spent the next 15 min telling me that I was waisting my time that every bullet that could be invented has been invented yada yada yada. I have him sign a non disclosure form and let him read my patent application.

THis guy knows firearms a lot better than I ever will. After reading my patent application he came around the counter and hughed me he said it was the best idea he had ever seen and that I need to get this on the market.

Have I given it some thought. Yes Does it work? Yes
Will it save lives? Thoulsands.

hope I answered your slam.

Hi,

Go to Yahoo type in accidental shooting. Now read some of the stories. A lot of those kids are not in school yet that are killing themselves and others. How do you let them know about guns. All they have seen is what they see on TV. Guns are power and no one gets hurt anyway.

Any device that can stop people from being killed accidentally is great I am all for it. Does that make me a liberal?

Thats your handle? The best you can do is slam an idea designed to save kids lives.

Ok. lets do this like this. Go put your gun in your safe or put your gun lock on it and see how long it takes you to get the gun ready to fire.

Same situation now you have a Safety Bullet in your gun. No need to find the keys to unlock your gun lock or to try and remember the combination to your gun safe just eject the bullet.

Its a great idea. Its fast and it will give you a level of protection you have never had before. If your not smart enough to remember that you have a safety bullet in your gun you don't really need to have a gun. That is one way the gene pool is cleaned up.

...mine is ready as fast as I can eject my SB.

Assuming, of course, that you remember to eject it! This is just one reason why your invention is horribly dangerous.

A situation where one needs to use a firearm is extrememly stressful. It's not unusual to find people forgetting to do "simple" things like removing a safety or charging the weapon in the heat of the moment. Rousing them from a deep sleep only compounds their confusion. However, pulling the trigger on a safed gun or one that is not charged will not leave the weapon unuseable; dropping the hammer on your "safety" bullet will.

The "you get your gun and I'll get mine" scenario you describe is only valid if a panicked individual attempting to use their gun doesn't forget to eject the safety bullet. Ralph will remember his safe's combination long before you have a chance to use your "special tool" to remove the jammed safety bullet.

Also, how does your device prevent a child from using the gun if he racks the slide? If yanks the slide back, like he's seen it done in the movies, your safety bullet goes flying and leaves a live round in its place. A traditional locking safety device won't do this.

I know that you had the best of intentions, but this is a really bad idea. To put it bluntly, your invention is going to get someone killed.

Hi,

So lets see if I understand you correctly you think that by haveing a device that locks in the firing chamber that somehow the gun is going to blow up? Can't happen. The Safety Bullet is lodged in the firing chamber not the barrel so no new lethal bullet can be introduced making it impossible for the gun to blow up.

Any other questions. I have given this three years of thought and people a lot smarter than I think its one incredible idea. Including the boys with the NRA.

Short little story.
I met an inventor that invented a new style of target. A target? A piece of paper that can be created with an ink pen and two seconds of work? I didn't understand why the guy was wasting his time. Heck, you can print out hundreds of targets and it won't cost that much. I left the guy and just shook my head.
He was the inventor of the Shoot-N-See targets and I don't think you can go in any gunshop in the country without finding them on sale.

Its a great idea.

It's a great idea for the gun control fanatics to pass legislation forcing every gun owner to have one in the chamber.

One more incremental step toward disarming Americans.
