'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

I think of this dumb device this way: It is a device that can be forgotten which is designed to prevent an accident when you forgot something else. Sounds like a stupid idea to me, and one that a typical liberal would think of. they usually fail to address the real issues, and, instead, find dumb solutions to problems that don't exist or will not work. They don't usually solve anything, but they sure do create a bunch of busy work.

Next time you see of an accidental shooting go to the kids funeral and look around. That is why I did this. I don;t want another person to have to live through that. THis will stop that.

"As in grand poohbah? Got a better idea that will stop a kid or anyone else from using your gun that still allows you to have your gun ready in less than 1/2 a second I would like to see it."

It is called a holster:

"So why have 70,000 people died by accidental shooting? "

2.65 million people are reported to use a firearm each year in self-defense. Perhaps 2,650 actually shoot. How many of them, using a device which prevents the firearm's use if forgotten, will die by their attacker should they fail to remember the device is in the gun? Again, this is a device to be remembered whose purpose is to prevent an accident from failing to remember something else. Not very smart.

If one can remember to keep loaded firearms away from children, they do not need to remember to remove your device later when they need to shoot.

smartypants time: Why don't we just train cops better so that many people won't get killed by them each year?

It is also called the Tueller Drill. Have someone stand 21 ft. away with a knife(hopefully simulated or dull) and see if you can draw and fire(hopefully simulated) before he can close the distance to you.

No it is not . You came here and posted this under the guise of promoting a free market patent and your motives were suspect to me from the beginning .

This role of saving the children and promoting something for safety is a sham of the 1st order and it is fostered by you . I do not find you to be an honest man and you should be deleted for fostering the agenda of deceit and the left , not my post to you .

It is my hope you AND your inspiration you cite come to what you are worth . Feel free to hit the abuse button at your leisure . Again . You still are a credit to social engineering and the left .

Ayoob mentions it quite a bit because a lot of the shootings that take place between gun and knife are police shootings. There's a lot of "Blue Suicide" that makes the relatives sue-happy so he's in demand as an expert witness.

Early in his writing career, Ayoob mentioned that in case of a problem with young toughs sitting on the steps harassing passerby-ers, he advocated tossing them five dollars wrapped around a book of matches. That violation of "not one cent for tribute, millions for defense" dogma nearly ended his writing career. He was fortunate to have a lot of good advice to say that helped him.
I also understand that, like me, he has a profane vocabulary.

He didn't hit the abuse button. I did.
If I remember correctly, it was that sentence that was filled with personal attacks that did it and the moderators agreed.
It's one thing to slip and call someone a name or call the object of an article a name without realizing that they're a Freeper and you'll notice that some of those are still posted.

It's completely out of the question to fill a single sentence with a tirade of personal attacks.

It's called free enterprise. If you don't like what he's selling, don't buy it.

I had an old cop textbook called "Street Survival". It quoted from NYPD uniformed cop shootout stats from about 1900 to 1980. As I recall, it was 0% at 100 feet or greater range, 70% at under 20 feet, 50% at under 10 feet, and 25% were wrestling matches with muzzles shoved into faces and ribs.

The book had a great photo of a dead off duty cop, killed when intervening in a stickup in a grocery store. He was sitting, legs splayed out, leaning against the end of an aisle with cans on the floor all around him.

He was carrying an auto, and never got a shot off. His trigger finger was bleeding, trying so hard to pull that damn trigger like on his duty DA revolver, he did not take it off safe, and he died.

The moral of the tale is that in a crisis he reverted to training and "muscle memory", which was mainly for a DA revolver.

This is another reason why the "Safety Bullet" is a bad idea, and will kill people when awakened by intruders: in a crisis they will NOT remember the hidden gun jammer, just like the dead cop did not remember he had an auto in his hand under combat stress.

Read my last sermonette about the dead off duty cop, and muscle memory under severe stress.

This gun jammer is going to kill people, then they will sue Mike Worley, 'inventor of the safety bullet'.
