'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

I have filed for the patent on this. Its MY idea. I have the ability to have them made or have them not made.

Well, are they made or aren't they or did you just claim that Walmart is buying 27 million of them in post 206. Perhaps, it was sarcasm. Was it? If not, like I asked in post #269, what calibers will Walmart be purchasing from you? Or are they not made yet?

Kind of like saying will I accept liablity if the guy can't find the keys to unlock his safe remember his combination. If they guys is that intellegent does he really need to have a loaded gun?

I hear a lot of well what if someone breaks in and I have your device.

Name me one device that is better than this. A safety device that locks the gun up. Not a blank.

The one I like is the guy sueing Burger King because he got fat. There is no substitute for intellegence. IF the guy is stupid does he get to sue me? Please!

Maybe he's got a 21' special tool. Hey! Now there's an idea!!

OK... So you've been awakened by the sound of breaking glass at 3 am. You grab your Safety Bullet equipped firearm and, as the knife wielding goblin appears in your doorway, you forget to rack the slide and drop the hammer on the Safety Bullet, spiking your gun.

OH NO!!

But have no fear; the 21' tool is here!! You quickly insert the tool and point the distal end towards your attacker. As he attempts to close to within 21' of you, his weight against the tool's extra-long handle drives the Safety Bullet out of the chamber, leaving the gun ready to fire. And as an added bonus, the tool keeps the thug at least 21' from you.

What a great product!!

If yours was worth anything, he'd be telling you to punt and duck the liability on this one.

Sorry to hear that. I only hope that none of these women's children die by their gun. Then they will be coming to see you. I hope you do promote locks of some sort.

What amazes me is how you can be so down on something without testing it first. Especially since your in the business of teaching firearm safety.

As far as the title of Accidental Shooting its a handle that was given to this type of injury long before I got involved. Have you checked out these sites? You probebly know a lot more about guns that I do can you think on any way to stop kids from killing each other. No I don't think a small kid will listen to you or even grasp the concept of what your trying to teach. So then where does that leave us.

Give me an answer or show me a better way or get on my side.

One problem - No plan of attack EVER survives initial contact with the enemy. In a life-or-death situation, don't expect to remember that a safety-bullet is in the chamber unless you have practiced ad-nauseum ejecting the useless cartridge before firing.

Proper training and practice is the only solution to gun accidents. Every gun is loaded, every time it is picked up. Protecting loved ones when the gun isn't in your hands requires other measures, IMO.

I will repeat what kildak said

*sigh* I know ... I have heard a zillion stats. None of them has convinced me that safety devices are really any better than good old fashioned common sense.

SafetyBullet-Inventor, I pinged you earlier to the Home-invasion thread but you never showed up.

Please read the article and tell me what the consequences of the 'safety" bullet would have been.

Hi,

yep got a 22 one being sent to me and a 40 and a 9 send me your address and I will send you some to test.

By the way the entire thing is all held together by a groove that has been pressed in the shell. It can not leave the firing chamber. It has worked every time. Send me your fax I will fax you the specs and the renderings.

Deal!?

You have given me two different answers to the same question. I asked "What did the folks at Million Mom March and The Brady Center think of your invention?"

In post #377 you answered "When I talked to the director of Brady he tried to start preaching the anti gun sermon . . ."

And now in post #418 you say "They thought it was a great idea."

In my opinion, anyone that would even deal with MMM and The Brady Center in the name of gun safety does not have the best interest of gun owners in mind.

Because there are a fair number of idiots out there. You're always going to have them. They can even become doctors, lawyers--and inventors of supposedly foolproof firearm safety devices, for that matter.

Your proposed solution does not address idiocy effectively--because it requires a perfect state of situational awareness on the part of the legitimate user in order to work properly, and such conditions are not the norm under the circumstances where one needs a firearm immediately.

What is the "21 foot rule"?

That happens to be the distance in which most lethal shootouts take place.

Sure I could accept the liability because someone was not smart enough to remember to remove their gun from their gun safe or not smart enough to remember the combination to any of the other safety devices out there. Or not smart enough to remember that they had a loaded gun and some kid found it and killed himself with it.

When that happens though its not the inventor of the safety device that goes to jail its the gun owner for 10 to 20 years so eventually all those that are objecting to be safe will be locked up and no one will have to worry about them any more.

Good. Now that you know where the GOA web site is, maybe you can refrain from mentioning what the NRA is or is not doing.
In order to defeat gun control, we have to work together. We don't need people complaining of groups in which they don't belong.
