This article was posted by SJackson back in 2000, but it is as relevant now as then.

Folks, the "Assault Rifle" atrocity is up for renewal in 2 years. Those who are voted into office in 2002 will decide whether this gross violation of the 2nd Amendment is allowed to die, is renewed, or is renewed with more restrictions on our rights and made permanent. GWB has already gone on record regarding this issue, saying that he WILL sign a renewal. It is our job, as gun owners, to make certain that it never reaches his desk. We must make the Republican Party understand that the only acceptable result is to let this law sunset. This implies that there must be a consequence to the Republican Party if they allow a continuing (or worsening) violation of our rights. This article spells out a good method to achieve this goal and to avoid wasting our time, effort and money where it won't do any good.

It should also be pointed out that there are some Democrats that are either pro-gun or on the fence (down south, for the most part, like Zell Miller). We need their votes, too. Those of you who live in their districts or states can also use the tactics outlined in this article to exert pressure.

Those of you who are belong to various gun rights organizations (esp. the 800-pound guerilla, the NRA) need to tell them to get on the stick about this NOW. We have precious little time to waste: THIS is the election that matters most for gun rights.

Excellent post.
The biggest litmus test right now is the Armed Pilots Bill and even the dems have seen the light on that subject. If any Republican votes against the Bill, it should be political suicide.

All we need do is pick off anti-gun Republicans and replace them with pro-gun conservative Democrats (or third party candidates).

I have been a firm believer in "working within the system" to alter the political course in favor of gun rights. But Bush thinks he has "paid off" 2A advocates by appointing Ashcroft and then having him make his little letter to the NRA public. So far, its all just rhetoric. I agree 100% that the sunsetting of the Federal AW ban is THE single most important goal of ALL the gunnies in the country. Getting rid of that worthless piece of crap will be the beginning of some real roll-backs in unconstitutional gun laws. If we cannot convince Bush et al, that this is a good idea, and if we cannot muster the support in Congress to make it happen, then we are in for a steady decline to the ultimate insult: national licensing/registration/confiscation. The writing is on the wall.

I would rejoin the NRA, but they spend the equivalent of my dues in postage, letters and flyers soliciting more money.

Many caution that even conservative Republicans cannot be trusted.

As witnessed just a couple of days ago when Larry Craig (R-ID) partnered up with McCain, Kennedy and Schumer on extending the reach of the NICS.

Good post--thanks. WorldNet Daily has an article today about x-cops being able to carry concealed/interstate WITHOUT CC permits (unlike US).

See:http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=28472

Gun rights organizations say legislation under consideration in the Senate that would allow active and retired police officers to carry a gun out of their jurisdictions – even across state lines – discriminates against ordinary Americans, many of whom are forbidden from carrying a gun even locally.--snip--

I too am watching the "Assault Weapon Ban". This is a bell weather law that will help me decide who to vote for.

"What did you do today?"

I assume that you said that in order to wake people up. In case that wasn't the purpose, I posted this article here and on "The Firing Line," thereby alerting others to the issue. I'll be writing letters and making phone calls on it soon. Yesterday, I bothered the $hit out of Kay Bailey Hutchison's staff about the issue of pilots being able to carry in the cockpit.

If 1 in 100 gun owners (roughly 800,000 people) were to write one letter or make one phone call to their Senators, Representative and the President each month, the impact would be stunning. Far from more gun laws, we'd see the pols falling over themselves to repeal the crap on the books. Let's get with the program!

Yes - it wasn't intended to be a personal attack.

Only 96 days to the election. I know it's still summer, but it's time for all of us to start working.

And I don't mean just writing letters - the candidates need people to answer phones, put up yard signs, distribute campaign literature, knock door-to-door.

Right now is when it matters most.

You have nailed it exactly -- that's why I let my membership expire. I joined GOA instead -- I don't know how they are spending my money, but at least it isn't on solicitations for yet more money!

At this point in time, the candidates can use your labor more than they can use your money.

Particularly in the state legislative races.

The average state legislature runs a campaign with only a handful of volunteers. And in this fight, it's usually the state house that matters most.

Look around - find an anti-gun incumbent who is beatable, and volunteer to help his opponent. And make sure he knows why you're there.
