I know what you mean, but I think his "loathing" is really deep fear. Not of the military, but of himself. Clinton is a cowardly man. He is also a vain man. I don't think he thought he could endure basic training, let alone combat. He also feared being a Private. He might've gone in as a JAG officer, stateside, as did LBJ in WWII, but Clinton's daemons run deep into his corrupted soul. It is then easier to hate what one rears.

A C130 specter gunship could have brought devastating fire upon the bad guys with deadly accuracy. Radar controlled mini guns, cannon and a 105 howitzer. It would have saved the rangers.
