Tribute To HEROES
.
If there's anything that identifies and personifies all military people, it's the dogtags. It's one of the first things we get, and sometimes it's the last reminder of who we are. They signify our unity of purpose and our dedication to our country.

The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics, beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals, is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women - and that is the force that the USO so serves.

What a beautiful and moving presentation, Snow Bunny.
It strikes responsive chords in all true Americans as we think of Rocky and all those like him,
who place country first and self last.
We owe so very much to men and women who are willing to give all that they are
to preserve our freedom and that of others.
May God bless them and their families today and every day ~ ~ ~

I am inspired. Sometimes, these threads are so moving, I hardly know what to say. This gets to me every time I see this...
The last time they heard his voice, he was singing "God Bless America" at the top of his lungs.
He is with God now and in a place so beautiful, we can't even begin to imagine.

PS: I love his teeth. He had a gorgeous, melting smile.

The captions on two of the photos seem to be inverted. The picture above President Bush speaking at the lectern in the East Room of the White House is of three previous MOH heros. Please note in this picture, immediately behind these men are the widow and sons of American military hero Major James N. "Nick" Rowe. He, more than anyone else, brought the story of Rocky Versace back from the jungles of Nam in his important book Five Years to Freedom, (1971, Little, Brown & Co.). Nick was a fellow officer and POW with Rocky. He was later killed by Communist terrorists in the Philipines.

The pictures of the statue memorial to Rocky Versace is from a Memorial Plaza constructed outside the Alexandria, Virginia recreation center. The dedication of this Memorial (which commemorates all of the American Service men killed in action in Viet Nam from Alexandria) took place on July 6. Many moving tributes were made during this ceremony, including speeches made by Virginia Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine, Michael Haisley, the Memorial artist, Tobian Mendez, and Gen. Pete Dawkins (ret.), president of Rocky's class at West Point ('59). These speeches can be viewed with RealPlayer here. These are well worth the time. If you are every in Alexandria, stop at the plaza, reflect on its meaning, and see what a wonderful job Rocky's friends and family have accomplished.

This tribute to Rocky Versace is so moving, so heart-tugging, so inspirational - I just had to say thank you!
What a soldier, what a leader, what an American, what a Christian, what a human being was Rocky Versace!
I cry when I think of the cruelty done to him and all the POW's during the Viet Nam war!
But, then, Rocky's magnificent defiance and fight to the very last for freedom, for America, for God, for his fellow prisoners, for the truth...
Words fail.
Just thank you, Rocky - now in heaven - and to his family - God bless all of you!!!
