Baby girl found covered in ants

CAROL ROBINSON
News staff writer

An 86-year-old Cullman County woman on her morning walk Wednesday discovered a infant girl abandoned in a cardboard box and swarmed with fire ants.

The baby, which appeared to be about two weeks old, was swaddled in a diaper made from old clothing and had a bottle of formula nestled beside her.

"Oh Lord, it was sad," said Cullman County Sheriff's Lt. Phillip Lambert. "It saddened everybody there."

The girl was alive and she was taken by helicopter to Children's Hospital where she was in guarded condition in the intensive care unit. Hospital spokeswoman Diane Black said the girl was being treated for numerous ant bites.

Grace Anderson said she walks in that area for exercise every day and was passing by about 10 a.m. when she heard a small cry. She went to investigate what she thought was an abandoned or injured kitten or puppy.

Instead, she found the box a crate-style cardboard container with cutout handles underneath a concrete picnic table shaded by a big tree near the cemetery at Valley Springs Church about two miles southwest of Good Hope on County Road 437.

She said she was stunned when she looked inside.

"She had so many of those little ants on her," Anderson said. "Her skin was bruised a little bit."

"I couldn't hardly think. She was crying and the little thing had the strongest voice you ever heard. It made me nervous," Anderson said. "She is a beautiful baby with a little old sweet face."

The box was lined with old clothes and blankets and the bottle was about a quarter full.

"I think they meant for her to be found," Lambert said.

Anderson quickly summoned help.

"They did a fantastic job getting the baby cleared of all the ants," Lambert said of the responding rescue workers.

Investigators were trying to determine the identity of the baby's mother. They had a description of a car seen leaving the area about 7:40 a.m. and were searching for it Wednesday.

The state in 2000 launched the Secret Safe Place program, which allows parents to leave babies anonymously in a hospital up to 72 hours after they are born without fear of prosecution for child abandonment or endangerment.

Lambert would not discuss whether authorities would seek charges if they find the mother.

"We've never had a case like this before," he said.

Anderson, a great-grandmother, said the morning's events shook her.

"It just does something to you. You can't get over it," she said. "Whoever put her there at the church thought they were giving her a good home. They just didn't know about the ants."

He measures it by cognition, though. Some chimps have more cognition than this infant, so scientists should do research on the infant according to Singer.

Can a blastocyst be anything other than innocent?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Which is funny, if you think about it. Singer likely doens't have much cognitive sense between the hours of 11 PM and 5 AM. In a Singer World, he'd be wise to keep his doors tightly bolted and windows boarded up at night. Falling asleep would be risky.

I love the smell of personal attacks in the morning.

I lost my ability to respect abortionists enough to engage them in debate when I saw my daughter's heart beating on a sonogram.

Rabid emotionalism? Anyone who can label parental love as "rabid emotionalism" is a monster for whom personal insults are a mere statement of fact.

A teenager with no means of support shouldn't be
forced to carry an unwanted fetus to term just
because you live your kids.  I am all for adoption
as a substitute for the sad need for abortion.
But make no mistake, there is a need.

Anyone ever read 100 Years of Solitude? Good but very disturbing book. At the end, the baby, who is a product of incest and has a tail, is drug off by the ants which, I guess are a purvasive symbol throughout the book, of decay.

Uhmm, abortion prevents unwanted births. Like this one maybe was.

Uhmm, abortion says it's okay to kill a baby, if he's unwanted. Like this one was.

Lambert will not discuss it, because they will seek charges. If the mother wanted to abandon the child, provisions had been made to do so without endangering the child or making legal entanglements for the mother. To do otherwise is child endangerment.

A teenager with no means of support shouldn't be forced to carry an unwanted fetus to term just because you live your kids.

A baby otherwise destined for a loving adoption shouldn't be killed to satisfy the convenience of a randy teenager.

I am all for adoption as a substitute for the sad need for abortion. But make no mistake, there is a need.

Only in your sick and evil mind. Please explain this need of yours to approve of killing, Dr. Mengele.

Let's see, that randy teenager is probably a month along, perhaps two or three before she figures out she is pregnant. So we are talking eight months of her life, weighed against the average life span of 80 years for her baby. And it isn't much of an inconvenience till the last three months and she can keep screwing around up until nearly the day she delivers.

Oh, but wait, she doesn't want her friends who know she screws around to know she is pregnant. So lets kill the baby over the discomfort of people seeing the consequences of her lifestyle?

Or lets let her parents kill the baby so they will be spared the embarassment of letting their country club friends know their slutty daughter got knocked up?

Or lets let them all kill the baby before they get attached to it? (Try that logic with a kitten or puppy.)

Come on, I really would like to hear a coherent need to kill a baby.

The logic is inescapable.....let's reduce crime by killing potential criminals (of course, how we determine if a fetus will be a criminal is still being worked out). And don't tell me that poverty breeds crime....rich crooks are a dime a dozen, and you can start with Gray Davis, Hill & Bill, Jesse Jackson, the Saudi princes, Castro, Khaddafi, and all the rest. Crime comes from character deficiency.

You would be more correct to state the abortion prevents taking responsibility for your actions. It prevents placing any value on life it's self.

Abortion allows you to "Do your thing" then when you find yourself pregnent, no problem I'll just make a quick trip to my friendly abortionest - Presto problem take care of now it's time to party again.

Yes, abortion is legal under the law. But that in it's self does not make it any less defenseless when viewed morally.

Bottom line of an abortion, murder of a defenseless baby, has no possible moral defense.

Uhmm, abortion prevents unwanted births.

Before killing unborn children was declared "legal" by our Supreme Court, these sorts of crimes were extremely rare in the US.
"Legal" abortion has cheapened life.
If it's okay to kill a baby hours before birth, why not hours afterwards?
In fact, that's the next leap of "progress" the pro-death crowd will push for next,
with their experts and "doctors" claiming it will ensure that "every child is a wanted child."

How about burying the mom who abandoned this baby up to her head in a fire ant mound.

Thanks for the support..I was beginning to feel lonely out there... How about that professor who thinks you should have up to 3 months AFTER birth to decide whether the baby should live or die.. just unbelievable.
